Need was originally from Worthington and had worked as a cab driver in Terre Haute for many years, was married with children and grandchildren. He had several brothers and the family was well-known in his hometown.
Right before Christmas, on Dec. 23, 1992, during the course of working his regular shift, Need was shot and killed, the apparent victim of a robbery. He was found lying in the road of the Gaslight Estates Trailer Court on the south side of Terre Haute. His cab was gone.
Need had suffered a gunshot wound to the neck, he bled to death, and a family was left in anguish.
Sadly, no one was charged and the affair became a "cold case" until just recently. After all these years, two people were recently charged with the Need murder and robbery.
William L. Allsup, Jr., of Terre Haute, was arrested last August in connection with the case. His jury trial will be held starting Monday.
Jury selection in the Allsup trial is scheduled to begin at 1:15 p.m. on Monday in Vigo County Superior Court Division III with Judge David Bolk presiding.
In a development on Thursday, co-defendent Lamar D. Perry agreed to plead guilty to a lesser charge in exchange for his testimony against Allsup in the jury trial next week.
Perry is currently serving 50 years in a California prison for aggravated robbery, but was extradited and arrived in Indiana last week to stand trial.
However, with the plea agreement that trial won't be necessary.
Perry has filed paper to plead guility to robbery resulting in serious bodily injury -- a class A felony. His sentencing was set for Aug. 27.
According to court documents, Perry alleges that he and Allsup planned and carried out the robbery that resulted in Need's murder.
Family members in Greene County are hopeful to see a glimmer of justice on the horizon.
"It's been such a long time," said Need's aunt Velma Heaton of Bloomfield, "I always knew there had to be two of them and I hope they get them."
These years have been hard on Jerry's family, but Heaton said they were bolstered by the belief that someday the killers would be caught. They just didn't know it would take this long.
