UPDATE:
The auction to benefit Jordan Murdock at the Vigo County Fair on Friday night went very. His grandfather, Gerald Murdock, reports that about $3,700 was raised from the goat donated by 4-H members and sold at the livestock auction in Terre Haute. Thanks you to a great bunch of 4-H kids and adults who made it all possible.
It's fair week in Greene County and you can bet it's going to be hot, humid and plenty dusty. Nonetheless, it's always a pleasant, but busy time for me and the rest of the staff here at the newspaper. Our staff will be attending many of the scheduled events and we urge you to watch our newspaper and Web site -- www.gcdailyworld.com -- over the next week to see the area's most complete coverage. I would be remise if I didn't send kudos to a bunch of 4-H kids from Vigo County, who has extended a generous humanitarian helping hand to a Greene County 4-Her, who had the misfortune of being involved in a serious accident on his farm tractor when it was hit by a semi tractor trailer in late June on State Road 67. Jordan Murdock, of rural Worthington, is slowly recuperating from those injuries in an Indianapolis hospital. He's a fifth-year 4-Her who will miss this year's fair. The neighboring members of the Vigo County Junior Leaders Club sold dozens of chocolate chip cookies, collected donations and even auctioned a goat at their fair Friday night with all of the proceeds going to Jordan's family to defray medical expenses. What a wonderful gesture for a fellow 4-Her that these kids didn't even know. Now that is a life lesson for some of us adults who get too busy in our own little worlds to look around and see someone hurting and offer to help. Here in Greene County, his 4-H friends also have been more than willing to help in this time of need. The 13-year-old had planned to show several animals -- goats and swine -- at the fair this coming week. Because of his injuries, there will be some of his friends who'll show his livestock. He was also able to complete several exhibit projects before the accident and they'll be judged this morning. However, Jordan -- because of fair rules -- can not participate in the livestock auction this coming Friday night. The fair leadership established long ago that the 4-Her who raised and cared for the animal is responsible for taking that livestock through the auction. There is no provision for sickness or injury. Knowing that, the fair council decided they wanted to make sure that Jordan had a "payday" at the auction just like his other 4-H friends. Tim Egnew, who serves as president of 4-H Clubs of Greene County, donated a hog that was butchered, packaged and frozen at Bloomfield Processing Company. The finished hog will be raffled off as part of the livestock auction with all the proceeds again going to the Murdocks to help with medical costs. Also, several of the queen contest candidates have decided to bake up some tasty treats and also raffle them off to benefit Jordan. It's things like this that make one proud that Greene and other counties in the state of Indiana are blessed with viable 4-H Clubs that are teaching our youngsters to care about others and more importantly to take the kind of action that proves that the caring is more than just words. Come out to the fair this week and be sure and attend the auction and help to make this a very good fair for Jordan Murdock and his family -- despite the terrible tragedy that has hit them. Jordan won't be able to be at the fairgrounds, but the many people who know him and his family can still make a difference. This can be a blue ribbon time for everybody involved.

I think it's wonderful what this community has done for this family. It's been truly amazing to see everyone pull together. People who know and love Jordan, and people who have never met him.
But I remember not more than two years ago, a young man was injuried in the pig mud wrestling contest and someone else walked his steer through the auction. So the rule was set aside once, can't it be set aside again?
