Posting on this site is a privilege; don't abuse it

Posting comments on stories which appear on this website is a privilege, not a right.
In the past few days, we have deleted several comments. And, when the individual continued to try and post in a manner that our staff determined to be objectionable, this individual was banned. When the same individual re-registered under a new and obviously fictitious name and address, they were again banned. We do check the names, addresses and phone numbers of the folks who register. If something doesn't look right or on the level...we do ban them. That's the way it works. We don't ask a lot of our readers when they post comments. Obviously, don't use any profane or foul language. Don't make allegations of criminal, legal or moral wrongdoing against any individuals -- adults or juveniles. It's doesn't matter if you name them, if the unsubstantiated allegation is made, the comment will be deleted. Don't talk about any other businesses in a negative light. The nature of the Internet makes it impractical for our staff to review every comment. If you feel that a comment is offensive, please log in or create an account first, and then you will be able to flag a comment as objectionable. Several senior level staff members will review it and we'll make the final determination of what goes off or what stays online. This is our site and we are accountable for its content. We want the comment section to be constructive, informative, thought-provoking, educational and a means to generate interest in a particular story or topic. We do not want the comment section to be a breeding ground for stupidity; a place to take 'pot shots' at any individual or groups; a place where anyone can say anything about anybody; or a place where one feels the inclination to say abusive things about another individual or group of people. We do encourage your comments and welcome them as long as they follow these pretty basic and common sense guidelines. Remember posting on this site is a privilege. Abuse that privilege and your objectionable comments will be deleted. If you continue to abuse the privilege you will be booted or banned. I agree with jss on posting criteria. Gogreenecounty has done a good job with not censoring the political discussion there. Profanity should be a no-no also obscene sexual references well, but not much else should be deleted. These webmasters get pressure from politicians and community leaders to do what they want. It is not the fault of the Daily World really. We are lucky that we can post anonomously, but chris and nick are public figures getting the heat from both sides.
In my opinion if you do not delete posts there will be so many that each individual one loses its importance. I look at news site blogs and there are so many offensive posts that it does not matter any more. Our public figures need to take what is said with a grain of salt and not get all bent out of shape by what some "nobody" says on a local website. Let elections decide. They should lead the way they see fit and wait until people vote to get all worried.

They were here for a day or so and now they are gone.
I just wonder how confidential this is. If someone who didn't like your opinion and were curious who you were, could they call the newspaper and be given that answer?

Freedom of speech is critical to our republic. I appreciate most blogs which attract intelligent dialogue. It is the privilege of an editor or owner to police their site to protect their interests and income. However, by stifling the speech of readers, a blogger alienates the more creative and thoughtful responses. It is OK to voice one's opinion, in a thoughtful way. If a person is vulgar, inconsiderate or rude, then readers should consider the source.
A blog should not be a place to confess your dishonest public life but a place to stimulate thought. As my grandpa once told me, "the only lie I've ever told is the one I am telling you right now." I always had trouble with that one.
My grandma was right, honesty is the best and only policy (she lived to 105 and had a blessed life).
I believe our county is blessed by honest, hard-working Hoosiers (there are certainly exceptions in every population) with a desire to help influence our children to pick up the flag and keep America's founding father's values intact.
I don't post by my given name because I work in the public and my opinion isn't always the most popular. It makes it nice to be able to say what you really think for a change. As our little world we live in doesn't always allow us to do. Politics and who's who plays into our daily lives all to often for us to be honest all the time. I for one enjoy being able to post how I feel and not worry about if it is going to effect my income or how my child is treated.
Butch old boy, I stay anonymous so people won't find out that I'm really a nice guy. I don't want to let folks know that I'm truly not the grumpy old fart that I pretend to be.

I think people should be required to post by their given names instead of hiding behind a userid. It might not cut down on the hateful posts, but at least the general public would know who posted it.
Anonymity seems to bring out the worst in a lot of people & I think if you have the nerve to put it in writing you should have the nerve to put your name on it.

True, but how can anyone support the cause if everything is deleted.
It doesn't really make sense to verbally attack someone in a public forum. That makes us appear to be too much like politicians. There is nothing wrong with having opposing opinions, in fact, that's what makes a democracy so great. But the person who attacks the character of another instead of the argument itself, is a small person who lacks the wit and wisdom to support the cause of their own argument.
It is good to make fun of ourselves and each other at times, as long as there is no malice intended, and finally, it is best to proofread your comments before posting to make sure that your comments won't be construed as slanderous or harmful to others.

It can be tricky allowing site visitors to make comments. This feature is something that sets this site apart from other news sites. It is my opinion that having this is a benefit.

I've had several comments deleted that were very complimentary. Did I compliment the wrong person?? Okay..so I suppose by saying this I'll be banned??
