Flying fish at The Phil

My eldest daughter, Megan, is a nurse at the Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. The work that she does with these children is beyond my capacity to comprehend. I am the type of person who just can't stand others being sick; it saddens me way too much and I feel so helpless. The thought of children being as ill, as many of these kids are, would be far and away too much for me to handle. I love being around kids, but I'm sure that I could never handle the emotions of working with these sick and injured children on a daily basis. I'm afraid that I would be in tears constantly.

This past weekend, Jerry and Gayle Margraff, once again sponsored the annual Big Mac Attack at the Phil Harris Golf Course. This tourney is a charity event for the Ronald McDonald House at the Riley Hospital for Children. The Ronald McDonald House provides living accommodations for families who have injured and sick children at Riley. If you didn't get the opportunity to participate in this event, you can still donate to a wonderful cause, just follow this URL: http://www.rileyhospital.org/information...

Jerry and Gayle have always put a lot of money, time and effort into this event and I salute them for their dedication to such a worthy cause. I have the greatest amount of respect for all who worked so hard to get the tourney completed this weekend in such trying conditions. I'd like to thank Bart Beard and his family, Brooke French, Paul Dunkerly and his sons, Dale Kinnett, and Jill Powell for all of the work that they put into making this tournament a success. I know there were others whom I have missed with this recognition and I mean no slight to anyone. Thanks to all who worked to make this such a great weekend.

This weekend has always been a holiday of sorts for me, just to be able to get together and play golf with Matt and Rusty, plus to see and compete against so many old friends. We were extremely fortunate this year to be paired with Rich Montgomery, Beth Wernz and Curt Hatton on the final day. I couldn't have asked for a greater group of people to spend the afternoon with. It was a wonderfully competitive battle all day Sunday against a trio of inspired challengers, who would just never give up. Matt, Rusty and I had a two stroke lead with three holes to go and wound up going into the last hole all tied up. All the while, both teams stood rooting for the others all the way through. It was an experience of pure sportsmanship that I will remember for a long time.

Matty has started a tradition over the past few years of having brunch at his house prior to teeing off on Saturday. It was really nice to have so many friends stop by this past Saturday and chow down on the pork chops, eggs and taters. Not to mention the occasional Bloody Mary. It is always a great start to the weekend and as a result, I now have a few new jokes to tell.

Hurricane Ike did its' best to spoil the day on Sunday, but the majority of the golfers hung in there, smiled in the face of adversity and finished it off. A big thanks to all who persevered and supported this tourney.

After coming off of the 10th green on Sunday, with the wind just a-howling at its' highest peak of the day, Curt looked at me, smiled, and said, "Simmons, no matter how bad we've got it out here, it's nothing compared to what those kids go through at Riley." Amen Curt, a big amen.

Sounds like the perfect combination, golfing with friends/family and supporting a great cause at the same time.

While I have the floor, I'd like to enter into the record a big Congratulations to Matt Sims for his selection to the Rose Hulman Sports Hall of Fame. Way to go, fellow Alum!

I changed the picture since I noticed that Matt wasn't in the original.

Next week Matt will be inducted into the Rose Hulman Athletic Hall of Fame. I think he just missed out on the Academic Hall of Fame. We're all proud of him and we'll be there for the entire event. I'll post an article on it next week.

I will answer you minermama, yes, Matt is his son, Ole Simmons is proud of him and rightly so!

I think I watch too many Andy Griffith reruns, I am not sure rightly so is proper grammar!

I've got 4 kids and proud of all of them. I raised them just the way Barney Fife suggested:

"Well Andy, today's eight-year-olds are tomorrow's teenagers. I say this calls for action and now. Nip it in the bud. First sign of youngsters going wrong, you've got to nip it in the bud."

And rightly so.

Ok, Now that I know Matt is being inducted into Rose Hulman Hall of Fame, I want to add my congratulations, too.

His Grandpa and I were very proud to have gone to some of his ball games.

I am really proud of him, too.

A big CONGRATS to two close frinds. And another wow for the eagle on Sunday.

I tip my hat to the Sims family as well. I don't recall who made the post "...I'd try to walk through a wall if you asked me, Keith.", though I would have to go along with that sentiment. Just don't ask me to vote for Obama. :::chuckle:::

Matt has already received my congrats on the induction, yet I will have to add I love ya Matty.

I've not had the priviledge to get to know the rest of your family, yet I can say Kayla is an impressive young lady who I very much enjoy working with and will miss very much when she leaves.

All my life my closest friends have been a lot older than me ( maybe that's why I like you Keith?-ha!), and I think it would have been a real pleasure to have gotten to know your father.

And since b Ball fan has left the Dylan quote up to me this time:

There's some people that

You don't forget,

Even though you've only seen'm

One time or two.

In the end, my dear sweet friend,

I'll remember you.

One last change of pictures for this blog.

Standing on the 10th green in the middle of the strongest winds that I've ever played golf in, we had to get a putt close to the hole. It was tough just standing there without moving, let alone trying to putt the ball. During this time, while I was waiting for Matt and Rusty to putt, I saw two fish come flying by us. The pelting rain made it difficult to ascertain if they were fresh water fish from nearby or salt water fish carried by Ike from the gulf. I came within inches of being slapped in the face by a fish tail as I waited. I wasn't sure if anyone else saw them and I didn't want to mention them because most people think I'm crazy anyway. So I let it go and never mentioned it to anyone.

On the way home after the tourney, I glanced out the driver's side window as I passed through Switz City and there they were, stuck in the fence around the WRV track. I stopped and went back and took this picture. These fish were in shock and trapped in the fence. I rescued them, took them home and fried them up for supper. Life is good.

Mr. Sims,

Congratulations to you as a Father, and to your children for thier accomplishments. You must be one proud Papa. Hope too see you on the golf course again in a week or so. As I'll soon be home after another stint in OIF and freezing once again. Ahh, but there will be grass. I can hardly wait.

Hard to believe a guy could get back to back snowmen and wind up with two skins. Ha

Stay cool Wes. Just now heading to a weiner roast, got to stop and get some grape jello. Adios Amigo.
