DAY 1
First round complete at Bardmoor CC. Beautiful place to play, temps in the 80's and very windy. Steve beat me by 2 strokes on the front nine and I beat him by one on the back, so he leads after the first day by 1 stroke. I feel good to be that close, considering the way I putted today. Amazingly, I hit the first three greens in regulation and walked away with a par on all three. Unfortunately, I couldn't keep it up.
The strangest thing happened on the 3rd tee box. A cart pulled up and in it was Terry Joe Miller. He had read about our tee time in this blog and came over to Bardmoor to say hi. Good to see the old feller again.
Ol'Simmons is tired, sore and a wee bit sunburned, but I feel great.
DAY 2 Day two consisted of 36 holes at Pelican Pointe, probably my favorite course down here. We were faced with some really tough winds again today, but it was a great time. Steve and I were paired with Dean and Janet from Ontario, Canada this morning, eh? A great couple and we had a very good time.
The painful arthritis in my hands and the soreness everywhere else, which is the result of my extended spell of inactivity this winter, are quite evident this evening.
Fortunately, I took over the lead today and Steve will have to battle back tomorrow. On one occasion, he commented that he didn't come all the way down here to see me lay up. Great comment that we will remember for years.
You just can't hardly beat 80 degree weather. I'm having second thoughts about coming back. Comments Showing most recent comments first [Show in chronological order instead] |

Cmon Simmons, email me the pix also..
Dis-Sabled! hahaha. Got the pix....glad that it was lovely weather and that everyone had a great time.
OK Simmons, I think its time for you to post a new blog...Im starting to think that Hart updates his blogs more than you...LOL
Ol Simmons definately know the knock down shots...
A guy could get used to that FL weather pretty easily. We couldn't have had much better weather for the week. It's always good to get to see Mom and Nick and Judy was there for a couple of days as a bonus. Wish my golf game had been in better shape, but it got better as we went along. Our scores were fairly close except for the one round, but our games are not very similar. Ol' Simmons hits that 12 degree driver off the deck about 10 times a round and I don't even carry a 3 wood. He never looks for yeardage markers, plays by feel, just like the pinball wizard, and plays mostly knock-down shots. Although (and this is for Mr. Robato) he did hit the occasional golf shot. I definitely need to learn the knock-down, the wind ate my lunch on several peninsular par 3s. All-in-all a great week.
Hi I am glad everyone is having such good weather. I am in Taos, NM and last night it snowed over a foot and was one below, zero that is. I have rarely been this cold. It is beautiful and exotic but oh so cold. Taos and Eagle Nest have changed over the years and not necessarily for the better, they even have a McDonalds now, my cousin said it took two years of arguing to get the city to allow it here and it is different looking than any I have seen, every building here must be adobe and it is. On the Plaza things have really changed, you can buy a tomahawk made in China. No golf here this time of year, my cousin, Dee Dixon from Worthington originally, now from Taos says that spring is one monday afternoon in August, no summer ever. Santa Fe is still beautiful, and not as cold, and not nearly the altitude as Taos. The road from Santa Fe to Taos is a typical scare the crap out of you road. The house I am in is at 7200 ft. above sea level, Mt. Wheeler is just a couple of miles away and it is 13,ooo ft. My cousin and his partner have a store there that sells old cowboy and Indian things, now I have a terrific cowboy hat, Randy believes everyone must have a hat. His house is something everyone should stay in for a few days, he lives off the grid a few miles outside Las Vegas, NM on land his family settled in 1607, yes that was a long time ago. Sometime I will write about the court case that is ongoing trying to settle a dispute about the title to the land he lives on. It was originally 11 million acres that was given to his family by the King of Spain and now it is down to about 200 acres, land treaties between governments can become complex.
Congrats Simmons on beating up on your brother I sure hope you are proud of yourself.
WOw, sounds like both old sims' had a great time. I wish I could have been there for a few rounds. I would have had to play dominos, so it may have all worked out in the end.
Well due to the cold front that has moved into IN, I will be spending my day listening to Jim Nantz and rooting for Brandt Snedeker who only beat me by 21 shots (I putted well) in three rounds at a college event in Aiken, SC.
Steve won the match play on the last day, which cost me $1.50, so I can't brag too much. It was fun, it was 13 rounds of golf, it was 234 holes in 6 and a half days and at the conclusion I outscored him by 6 strokes. That's an average of one half of a stroke per round. Not much to brag about, but I will anyway.
Well congrats on your bragging rights for a year!!!The weather up here is supposed to be in the 40s this weekend, so you might want to leave those shorts in Florida.
It is all over, Ol Simmons has won.
Sorry to disappoint those of you rooting for Steve, but it just didn't work out this year. Anyone who has ever played the game, will understand that you have your good days and bad days.
Fortunately for me I had several more good days earlier than Steve, He has taught me so much about the game over the years and there is no one whom I'd rather play with, but this year was mine.
He still remains a better golfer than Ol Simmons, I just happened to catch him at the right time.
Another 36 holes tomorrow, just a quarter a hole, match play. No doubt in my mind, I'll win again.
Look forward to seeing you all soon.
Virg is now in charge of all your phone calls.
Your updates are great, but we also need to know whom leads whom after each day. Congrats to ol' Simmons for an eagle this early in the season!!!It sounds like you are golfing your ball very well. Dont give up Steve, you can win me a frosty cold beverage...Or cost me one.
I doubt that will happen since I haven't been tickled since the Dodgers left Brooklyn.
I would bet on Steve, if he could get you tickled like he did when you were young.
Florida Momma
We played Oak Ford this morning, Day 5, and Lake Venice this afternoon. We have now played 9 rounds of golf or 162 holes in the past 5 days.
I managed to hold onto my lead and even threw in an eagle on the last hole of the day.
Like Yogi said, "It ain't over, til it's over".
To Stuck @the Big Fenced in Place: If it gets too tough, see if Virg can help.
Steve and I were wondering Robato, who in their right mind would have bet on me?
Stay down there another week, cause you know the Indiana weather is getting ready to turn sour again. I have yet to touch a club, and am getting very angry about it..
After Day 2, I was ahead of Steve by 12 strokes, after Day 3 it was down to 7 and after today my lead has dwindled to 5. We played another 36 holes at Pelican Pointe today. It was really the first day that the wind was not a factor.
I took it easy on him since it was his birthday, but I may have to turn it back on tomorrow.
Looking at playing a course called Long Marsh in the morning, just kicking back now for the evening. I could probably grow accustomed to this kind of life without much effort.
You have to come back! I'm getting tired of taking all your phone calls. It sounds like you are having a good time.
"Didn't come all the way down there to watch you lay up."..that is hilarious. Happy Birthday, Uncle Steve.
Just how big a lead do you have on Steve???Please tell him Mr. Robato wishes him a happy birthday!!!The weather here is beautiful right now, but its not quite shorts weather...Tell Steve he needs to turn the tide some cause I have money riding on this..

Day 4 - April 7th, Steve turns 56 today. He mentioned something about hitting from the old man tees, but I don't think that is going to happen. I will try to be nicer to him though.
Steve and I have played 90 holes of golf in 2 and a half days. It has rained hard tonight and last night, but the sun has shone for three straight days.
Can it get any better than this? I doubt it, not from my perspective. There is so much to be said for going outside in your shorts and a tee shirt at 10pm. This is making the concept of retirement much more appealing.
No I wouldn't. 36 holes today, just plain beautiful. Played Sabal Trace this morning and I finally broke 40 on the back nine at Lake Venice this afternoon. Sunshine, good golf, Mom, Nick, Steve and I had a great time. Heading to Cracker Barrel (with a C) for supper. No I don't miss Indiana weather at all. I still lead Steve going into Day 4. Whee HA.
You would love today up here....
