Retirement Dilemma

Retirement...now there is a word worth repeating...retirement. Just a wee 18 months away now from eligibility for this old guy. That is the saddest part, you've got to be old to retire. I've always thought that retirement would be so much sweeter if you could enjoy it while you were young. The idea of retirement sounds much more exciting if you still have the mental faculties and physical abilities to properly tackle the pursuit of happiness. I think that right now I could really enjoy it, but in a few years as I get older, my get up and go may not be as willing as it is now. I remember talking to my Dad about retirement years ago. Dad said that retirement was really the first job that he ever had for which he was overqualified. Yes, I do believe I am my Father's son. While talking with some younger folks the other day, I was asked what I was going to do when I retired and, quite frankly, I just didn't know. I told them that I may just continue working for awhile. This comment aroused much consternation from the younger crowd. They accused me of eliminating a position for someone who was just getting out of school and trying to start their career. They asked how I would feel if I knew I was keeping a young man or young lady from getting a job because I wouldn't retire when I could. I hadn't thought of that and really I didn't want to think about it. I have a tendency nowadays to shy away from thoughts that create possible overtime workload situations for my brain. But I thought about it and I am still thinking about it. I probably would feel bad about it for awhile, if I knew for sure that I was the reason that someone couldn't get a job. If all of us old people continue to work after we become eligible for retirement, there just may not be enough jobs available for everyone.
But wait, I may need that job too, I may not be able to afford to retire when I'm eligible. I believe that I've earned the right to stay after 33 years of slaving away in the salt mines. Why should I worry about some young whippersnapper if I need the job too? I've already put a great deal more thought into this than I had anticipated or planned, so I am just going to retire to bed, read a good book and let the rest of you advise me on this dilemma.

I think you would be an asset to the retirement community.
Simmons, it is great to read your article!! It took you long enough, but it is not how you drive, but how you arrive!!
Thanks, that's pretty awesome to have GCExpatriate quote a fellow alum, to have a welcome mat thrown out by Wigs and finally a tip from one of The Phil's finest golfers. Life is good.
Unfortunately, Navy beat Army today for the 6th straight year. I fear that we may be in a minor slump.

I enjoyed the article and look forward to Putting more notes on to the end of your work myself..
After my mother retired she said she actually worked harder the next 2 yrs than she had the 10 previous.. but its all been down hill since LOL.
Was hoping to be the first to congratulate you on your initial blog, but I should've known a legend, such as yourself, would generate quick and multiple responses. A couple of things to keep in mind as you contemplate retirement: "Retirement means no pressure, no stress, no heartache... unless you play golf." Gene Perret
"Don't play too much golf. Two rounds a day are plenty." Harry Vardon
"If you are going to throw a club, it is important to throw it ahead of you, down the fairway, so you don't have to waste energy going back to pick it up." "Terrible" Tommy Bolt
I guess in your case Tommy should've added not to throw it over the airport fence, either, unless you happen to have a favorite nephew along with you to retrieve it.
I've never thrown a club over an airport fence without a favorite nephew at hand.
It is such a shame that that Chris& Jeremy's Dad didn't see how Simmons retrieves a club thrown over a fence when his nephew is not there. It makes an interesting sound.
You have no obligation to relinquish your current position in an effort to allow a younger person that opportunity.
If that person is truly qualified they'll find themselves gainfully employed sooner rather than later.
You've paid your dues, and have earned the right to make these decisions. That said, it's good to finally see someone at least considering the future of those around them rather than always focusing on themselves as we're often wont to do.
Only retire when you're ready.
Financially, and mentally.

Floating putters, Brilliant!!!
Not really. Putters are something you can get very mad at without getting into trouble. Do you agree Keith?
I don't buy the thing about needing to retire so that a younger person can have your job.
There are days...like today...when retirement looks so good. I wonder sometimes if I can make it that long...it just seems like an eternity.
Maybe I need to go and let these young folks have it.
This blog has become discouraging, depressing and downright stressful and that just isn't any good for anyone. I need to start another blog.
"Not only is stress unhealthy; it also causes you to age more rapidly, as we demonstrated by an authoritative 1987 study by the Harvard School of Medicine, which concluded that "in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Grumpy looks WAY older than Happy.""
Dave Barry
I would like to retire and do studies like that... use my Edumacation and do some Stats and Calculous something I have not used since graduation in 84 LOL
I say retire and make room for the people who will be paying your social secutity. Better give them a running start because there's a whole lot of people that will have to be supported. I predict taxes going sky high!
