With the sectionals coming up this week, I thought it would be a good time to share some late season basketball thoughts -- especially after the excitement concerning the IU situation. Sampson has no one to blame but himself. Long ago, I was told "when the rule is clear, the penalty is severe." This is basically his third strike. It is amazing to me that after three strikes, they would pay you $750,000 to walk away. I've been amazed at some of these so called experts who've covered this -- especially Digger Phelps of ESPN. My surprise was not so much with their opinion of Sampson, but with their reactions toward the kids missing practice. Many wanted to act as though these kids should have been punished etc. Thankfully Dan Dakich seemed to have more sense than these people already. Coach Dakich pointed out that the kids had been through a great deal and that they needed some time, calling it a non-issue. His actions may go as far in the transition and healing as anything this week. He showed some people skills that Phelps perhaps lacks and maybe that are why he didn't coach any longer than he did. For most of you fans who watched the Tennessee-Memphis game --which Digger also got wrong.
Congrats to Linton for tying Shakamak in the Tri-River Conference. I guess there's something to be said for winning at the right time. 4 of their 5 wins were against TRC opponents. More kudos to two former assistants of mine; Joe Pigg at WRV and Sammy Karr at Turkey Run who led their teams to the regional finals in girls' basketball. Because both have fairly young teams, I look for them to have continued success in the future. For our local sectionals, I like WRV -- I've changed my mine since the beginning of the year. We're never sure which Shakamak team will show up and WRV is playing on their home floor. Coach Hall's Wolverines are also playing extremely hard and will definitely be motivated to avenge an earlier loss to the Lakers. It will be a different sectional without Bloomfield there. It will hurt the gate and it just won't be the same not being able to root against the Cardinals. At the North Knox sectional, I like South Knox to win, but don't count out Ron McBride and his Cardinals -- they're always a tough out in the tournament. Good luck to all players, especially the seniors. This is your last opportunity to live these moments, leave it all on the floor. gee what a tough way to win one! and to think #1 in A and Jac-Cen-Del are out already...
I had plans to be in Iowa over semistate time--- I might have to cancel.
I guess we know which Shakamak team showed up now, Joe.

This is all very interesting. I am proud to say I am from Bloomfield. Life and times have taken me away from my beloved Greene County, and I really miss it. We are all just small towns that should try to get along - and by the way.... I believe Joe lived in Bloomfield !?
I'm glad Dakich took the stance he did. The media is who ran with this.
I still think that Friday night's game between WRV and Shakamak will give us the winner. WRV is playing better basketball, but they have no answer to Shakamak's size.
The mystery of the WRV/Washington game is why WRV's administration would back out of a game exchange(WRV would get Evansville Day, while Washington would get a bigger E-ville school) only to cancel the game. From a coaching stance, it makes perfect sense. WRV had nothing to gain. I doubt any 1A schools have 2 D1 seven footers.
We all love to hate on Bloomfield. People from Bloomfield make it so easy. With that said...I would root for Bloomfield over any school outside of the county.
People like underdogs, what about this concept is so difficult to understand? Hickory was the underdog, get it.It is not a hair splitting argument to realize that there is a difference between facts, and opinions. You express an opinion that Joe takes a jab at Bloomfield any chance he gets.Your opinion is not a fact.Try this, pull up Google and type in fact vs. opinion.
Good job Joe,like Howard Cosell, "just telling it like it is." Many perhaps most people root for the underdog in sports and other matters. For example Boston vs New York in the World Series, anyone who boxed against Mike Tyson, or Ali,everyone who roots for Butler, one could go on and on with this theme. What parts of "Hoosiers" did you miss Pastime. Your comment is bias, base and without thought or merit. When Bloomfield won the sectionals most people from the county were for the Cardinals in the Regional.Instead of whining why not just make a comment. While I do not condone players staging a "walkout" Dan Dakich took the high road, seldom seen at IU lately, lately being the last thirty years.Dakich appears to be a good guy cast into a poor situation. At this point the only thing that could keep IU from the NCAA tourney is NCAA sanctions for corruption. The only reason for the Big Ten tournament is for an underdog to get into the tourney and money, more games more money. There are downsides to the Big Ten tourney, first injuries, second people all over the country having to watch Big Ten fans behaviors.By the way Buck, good comments, thoughtful and to the point.
Pastime: I doubt it. If both teams had a bye, the game definitely would have been played. Why would WRV want to put their own kids at a disadvantage?
I am definitely not a coach...but I am sure that the coaching staff had the following in mind.....
WRV would have to play four games in seven days to win the sectional plus lose Sat as a day of practice in preparation for the sectional.....I don't think that WRV played this regular season to play Washington.
Their focus has to be on the sectional....If you want to see Wash. play, I am sure you will have (or had) a chance to do it this season.
Good luck to the boys and coaches...Keep your eye on the prize.
Of course the WRV sectional will not be the same. The team that won by far the MOST sectional championships is the one missing. Maybe they can raise the price of popcorn to help compensate for loss of the gate revenue. GO CARDINALS!
Great job again Joe!
I agree and hope ur right at the WRV Sectional. This would or could be the first time that WRV has won a sectional without a Graves on the team!
Sure would have been neat to watch Indiana's only McDonalds All American play this weekend!

oh talking collage BB for a second.
I will make this known (from the UK website).
The last time a team defeated UK by 41points my Alma Mattered (ya spelled for the fun of it like) as Rose Poly was the last team prior to Vandy to do it! in 1910 but still ROSE ribbed'um'
Joe in most cases I would agree with you, but what kind of message are you sending. First missing practice could have cost the TEAM the Big Ten Championship, second we had one group of players basically hire a coach( Mike Davis) and that was part of the problem here, some of the players didnt want Dakich. and now you are telling the kids that did attend pracitce that it really didnt matter. So you reward the kids that missed, by playing them more than the kids that obeyed the rules. I remember BoB Knight once stating,"I dont have many rules, the reason, I never know who is going to break them."
