RULES and REGULATIONS

The basketball season is well underway. Some teams are quickly making impressions as to whether they are good or bad. I'm still waiting for the cream to rise to the top.
Sometimes coaches must concern themselves with things off the court, such as discipline and training rules. Most rules anymore are covered by athletic handbooks and board policies. Back in the old days, coaches were left to take care of each incident alone. There's both positive and negative aspects of both practices. Sometimes because of status, better players were treated differently than lesser players. I can remember an amusing incident at Dugger where one of our "better" football players was caught drinking. In order to protect this former player's identity, we'll just call him "Billy Bob". On the weekend that Billy Bob got caught drinking, Dugger was scheduled to play North Central. The NC folks were happy to hear this becuase he was such a good player - assuming of course, that he would not be playing. Dugger's football coach decided that Billy Bob's punishment was running a mile in full football gear. Needless to say, NC was surprised to see him playing. After the game in which Billy Bob scored 5 TDs, the NC coach came to me and asked what Billy Bob had been drinking becuase he thought maybe his players could use some. Sometimes, I think coaches have too many rules. I think basically you should only have 2 rules. I always had a rule that if you didn't show up for the game you couldn't play - never had anyone break that one. The other is to not do anything that would embarrass the program. This one seems to cover many items that others want to list. Coaches seem to get upset about kids missing practice. I know I did. One year, after two young men missed practice for a concert, I made it clear that I didn't care if Willie Nelson was playing on their back porch, they'd better never miss another practice. We also seemed to have trouble several times with kids wanting to miss to go deer hunting. None of these seemed to be issues with good teams though. Its amazing how many excuses people will come up with when the team isn't very good... It's like Iverson said "we're talkin' 'bout practice". IU seems to be rolling along. Of course, the schedule hasn't been very strong. Rumor has it, they are going to schedule Medora and Shoals back-to-back just so they are able to claim victories over one-named schools. Also they've failed to win a road game yet. It will be interesting to see Sammy Karr's Turkey Run girls' team play at Clay City on Saturday. The Warriors have a set of triplets (not identical) that are freshmen on the team. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

Would it be better to practice over the break?

Illinois State wasn't a road game? It wasn't played at Assembly Hall. Would it be too gutsy to add Dugger to that list of one name teams?
you know why dont you PASTIME--- thats because the big boys were too scared of dem' bulldogs.
Wow, back in the day, a one-game suspension for drinking? Now it's half the season.
I hate new rules.....as a offical I dread it....i am a official in softball and every year somewhere in Calif. a coach bent the rule and it is changed....this year we get metal spikes on the girls....like 2 cats tails tied together . this should be fun..."look mom 15 stiches and a it is only the first inning"...the fans are just getting out of hand ....yelling and screaming at the refs...I saw my son play last week...this overweight fan (285lbs) yelling at the top of his lungs.....theses officials only make if $50.00 a game....that does not give a fan the right to humilate a human being....not right at all....sometimes I am at games and hear the heckle, boo's hiss'' .when I officiate...sometimes I like to say to that person....here is a application if you can do better have at it. One time I went back to a school and saw grandmom who gave me hell last time I was at their facility. i sat down right next to her with my gear on 80 degree weather, sweting, and said to her....you know you were right...you can see it better on the bench...she shut her pie whole real quick....
the IHSAA does nothing for the official but give us a lic, a patch, a rule book, initial test, no schooling, no support, learn on your own, and it is sad for $50.00 fee to tell kids " foul" or "strike" or even touchdown.
when i go to see my son or daughter play and you are a fan that is yelling like a jackass...trust me I paid my $4.00 to see them play and not to hear your yelling at the ref....so if you see me come towards you " shut the &8**($#& up........or get a application and see if you can do a better job....
we do not make alot of money listening to fans bitch, and bitch and bitch. we travel sometimes 2 hrs for a 2hr game. some of us take off from work to do games...I work nights just so i can do games...i like what i do...i hate fans who do not know the rules...so sit there and shut up....
I know what your saying John J. I understand as I have umpired softball games myself. I had a proposal to a school board onetime (they were having problems getting officials for JRhigh games) about haveing a class in school that taught OFFICIATING
and that as part of the class the students had to officiate jr high and elementry games. the school couldnt figure out how to fund it.
BUT on another note I have yelled at officials. I have when I know they've not shown they knew the rules themselves and beleive me THAT HAPPENS! I dont blame them for not seeing everything at all--- thats the very reason I never applied to get licenced for basketball-- I am always to interested in THE GAME and would miss calls all over the place.
BUT I DO FEEL FOR YOU AND APRECIATE your work..... I just know some of you are better than others :)
