Take Me Out to the Ball Game
Posted Thursday, April 24, at 9:41 PM
Last Monday I ventured over to White River Valley to watch the undefeated Bloomfield Cardinals and the WRV Wolverines play softball. As far as an exciting game, I was not disappointed -- I cannot remember if it went 10 or 11 as the scoreboard ran out of innings after 9. Girls softball I know is exciting, especially for the parents. To me, however, there seems to be something missing -- like hitting. It just seems to be such a pitcher dominated sport. Apparently there was one hitter that Bloomfield thought could really hit the ball because in five plate appearances she saw 20 straight balls. This couldn't have been much fun for her. I'm not faulting Bloomfield because you have to play to win and she's a run waiting to happen, but I just believe it must not be fun for her to know going into a game that she'll never get a pitch to hit.
By the way, according Barry Bonds' personal historian Rusty Hash, even he never got 5 intentional walks in one game -- although he was intentionally walked with the bases loaded. I know I'm not the world's most intelligent guy, but here are some things I don't understand about softball... 1. Why do they play with a special colored ball. I asked my friend Beth Wernz why they play with that green ball and she informed me that as an art teacher I should recognize that it is optic yellow -- not green. All I know is it looks to me like a not so ripe grapefruit. I was told that the color makes it easier to see... And I didn't even know Ray Charles played. 2. What's with these little tiny players running around in the batter's box slapping at the ball? You'd swear they are well out of the box when they hit it... but they really aren't. A full swing was rarer than a $2 gallon of gas. I think there were only 2 balls that reached the outfield the entire game. It makes me think that the outfielders should be picking up unemployment checks rather than athletic letters. On the whole it was an entertaining afternoon because the kids played hard, had fun, and really worked at what they were doing. But as far as I'm concerned, I still liked the slow pitch game where everybody had to use their glove and everybody got to hit the ball... but that's just me. As I say this, I realize that these kids nor baseball players really have no place to play when they graduate due to the demise of slowpitch leagues.
Welcome Back Joe It's been some time since I've posted anything, but I've noticed some things lately that I'd like to address. The NCAA tourney this year was one of the most exciting with several close games throughout. Stephan Curry was a pleasure to watch during Davidson's run. ...
TOURNEY TIME With the sectionals coming up this week, I thought it would be a good time to share some late season basketball thoughts -- especially after the excitement concerning the IU situation. Sampson has no one to blame but himself. Long ago, I was told "when the rule is clear, the penalty is severe." This is basically his third strike. ...
TRUST If I had to pick one word to summarize what makes a good basketball team, it would be TRUST. Players must trust the coach and the coach must be able to trust his players to make the right decisions, take good shots, be where they are supposed to be, and do the things they're supposed to be. ...
Legends With the baseball hearings going on before congress I find myself very agitated. As long as there is an uneducated child, a homeless person, an American soldier in combat, Congress has more important things to worry about than spending money and time dealing with baseball. Let baseball commissioner Bud Selig and the owners clean up their own mess...
Tourney Time It's good to be back after the vacation, I hope everyone had a happy holiday (I want to be politically correct in case Keith Sims is reading). Congratulations to the Shakamak Lakers on winning the Greene County Tournament. Billy Newton was a very good choice for most valuable player and showed a lot of class including his team mate Ethan Stanifer as co-MVP. Isn't it amazing that 16 year olds sometimes have more maturity than adults?...
Assistant Coach Congratulations to Joe Pigg and the Wolverines on their 11th victory this year. They've at least assured a tie for the SWIAC title. Joe was one of my assistant coaches while we were successful at Dugger and has done an outstanding job at WRV. I was very fortunate while at Dugger of having some outstanding assistant coaches. One of my favorites was Tom Phegley -- who later became the varsity coach...
Nice Guys Don't Finish Last According to the late Leo Durocher, nice guys finish last. After giving this some thought, and looking back over my 20+ years in coaching, I can think of at least 5 nice guys that didn't finish last. Of course I know I've coached more than 5 nice guys, but these five have a special place in my memory...
RULES and REGULATIONS The basketball season is well underway. Some teams are quickly making impressions as to whether they are good or bad. I'm still waiting for the cream to rise to the top. Sometimes coaches must concern themselves with things off the court, such as discipline and training rules. ...
Pre-Season Ramblings Back again for another year of basketball, but as usual, we'll cover other things as well. I just got done watching IU play UT-Chattanooga - the "Mocs". I wasn't sure if that was short for Moccasin or Water Moccasin. I didn't know if I would get bit by a snake or stepped on by a shoe. ...
