Don't be naive!
When any politician has a tax deal for you, politely turn it down and go along your merry way. Back a few years ago, the Greene County Solid Waste District was supposed to have a one-time $12 fee to everyone's property tax bill. The idea of the fee was focused on temporarily funding their loss of lucrative tipping fees from the Worthington landfill, which the new owner, Rumpke, closed.
That was a few years ago now. Actually, it was 2004.
When I inquired about the apparent mistake at the Treasurer's Office at the Courthouse during this past tax payment -- that this was obviously a mistake that they were adding to each of our property tax bills for several years now when it was only supposed to be one year -- I was met with this response: "You are so naive."
Yep, I guess so!
In fact, I still have the newspapers to prove that the fee was SUPPOSED to be a one time fee, which didn't happen as we all know now. (See image from the 12/30/04 Linton Daily Citizen above.)
Where's the accountability here? Why are we STILL paying this fee three years later?
I'm all for recycling, but the Solid Waste District IS NOT mandated by law as it was construed. Simply, the law requires an office in each county to supply information, not a recycling center as we have now.
If you ask me, we need to make a decision as a county: do we do the minimum required by law, or do we do a full-fledged, county-wide recycling program, which will require curb-side service for everyone to get everyone involved?
In my opinion, we either retreat to the minimum required or we get everyone involved in recycling. There is no middle ground (as we have now) because it's a losing proposition that will continue to require taxpayer support.
Voice your opinions to your local politicians. Personally, I'm not so worried about the twelve dollars, as I am about the precedent this sets. Will any and every governmental agency institute an on-going fee on us if they can't meet their fiscal obligations?

I never said kill babies. I am more of the mind to tie both parents tubes after a successful birth. Seems easier and more politically correct.

obviously they are worth-less than the metals or they would fetch a better price.
I would rather fund some sort of health care coverage for the poor or working poor then spend our tax dollars paying for a curbside pick up program.
Sadly I don't know how to effectively enforce it. China quit killing them years ago when they'd found out that children were a commodity. I read the other day that China done away with the one child law. Probably to look good for the olympics.
How do you consider those items worthless? By saying this it tells me you are uneducated on the many uses of recycled plastics, glass and paper products.

Let's form another branch of government to keep married couples at one child. I think it should be called the United Communist Socialist Progrssive Chinese Department of Human Population control.
We can raise taxes to pay for it. No one will care, as long as everyone is treated exactly the same (except the wealthy...we can tax them more).

High fuel prices and the housing market is the problem with this country. Overpopulation doesn't help. I think a couple should only be allowed one child. We don't live on family farms anymore. We don't need the extra farmhands.
I agree, for dishonest people. For example, Al Gore has received an estimated 60 million dollars for his politically motivated, propaganda film.

If you pay someone enough money, you can get them to say whatever you want.
I haven't watched the lecture yet, but the data in the presentation was very informative. The last time I checked, about 80% of Al Gores powerpoint and book have now been proven false or fraudulent.
I guess the bottom line is, if it helps get America more self sufficient from foreign oil and emphasizes a cleaner America, then those two points are noble.

Big oil is not the problem. They are companies trying to make a profit for their shareholders. Over thirty percent of the prices we get charged are from government taxes and over-regulation. Their hands are tied by the Democrat Congress not to drill in Alaska, not to build profitable refineries and to keep their product under more government regulation and taxation than most other industries. The government is "The Man".
I recommend if you think their profits are too high, then you should buy some of their stock. Microsofts' profits are bigger than most oil companies and I bet you are using their products right now.
The earth does not need saved. It is not in trouble, our children are. Education in economics and ecology would be a great place to start.
In the meantime, our country continues to prosper, especially for those who work smart, hard and with enthusiasm.
I don't see our country prospering. I do see Big Oil making a few billion extra dollars. It might just be me, but I blame them for about ninety percent of the problems in this country. So if I can stick it to "The Man" I will. I am in the process of looking for a cheap diesel truck so I can run it on vegetable oil. Grow my own food so I don't have to pay outrageous food costs. Walk to places if it is feasible. Use less electricity. I am doing my part to save the world, are you?

That quote is taken from the ncdc report (mar. 08) that also does not mention anything about record numbers of tornados. Last year was a very subdued year for hurricane activity although 2006 was active.
The new buzzword is "global climate change" which reminds me of the old saying about waiting around on Indiana weather.
I respect the concern for our environment and in no way endorse irresponsible behavior by corporations. We must achieve a medium so that our country can continue to prosper.
I really wish they would have named "global warming" something different. All of you naysayers get hung up on the word warming. It isn't solely about the temperature. Through March of this year there has already been a record number of tornados. Hurricanes and the likes are becoming stronger and more frequent.
How does a group of people win a Nobel award if there is no merit to their claims?

I agree, scrappers will not take what is worthless and a waste of time to pick up.
america...I'm pretty sure that scrapper won't accept #1 & #2 plastics, newspapers, magazines, cardboard and the various other items that are accepted at the local recycling center.
I have never thought food for fuel was a good idea. I do believe solar and wind and maybe even water are good sources.
I do believe in resource conservation. Personal resources should be conserved especially the way this economy is. I do think that the "shopping spree" is critical to local vibrancy but, Americans as a whole would do much better by saving more resources for a rainy day. Recycling can be part of that, as aluminum and other scrap metal can bring a pretty penny that could be individually conserved.
Natural Resources are a different matter.

On the subject of energy, I do not believe there is much need for conservation. I would bet there is more oil than sand in Saudi Arabia and more oil than tumbleweeds in Texas. I hear speculation on massive amounts of oil sand deposits throughout the rocky mountains and coal is incredibly abundant as well: especially around here. I do not see any wisdom in using food for fuel in the form of ethanol: where is the moral high ground in burning food when so many on our planet go hungry? Do you know what the price of rice in China is? Record levels. (Investment tip: ag is bullish MON, MOS)
I sure would like to see our nations energy policy reflect a sence of practicality. How about building some more refineries or more new coal fired power plants. Put people to work and find real solutions to our energy crisis. Pipedreams of alternative energy solutions only cause the poor and the meager to suffer and make the middle class spend their disposable incomes on higher costing utility bills.
This is the malaise of our current economic state.
"If we would only turn our thermostats down a couple of degrees we could save all this energy." "If only Americans would not drive big vehicles or have big houses". "Americans eat to much and are obese as a people." Where does that leave us if we reverse all those truths about ourselves?
Well I personally don't trust the media. There are just as many pro-scientists as there are con-sciantists. Both can agree that changing our ways and saving some of our resources are a good idea.
...Then again what do all those journalists and scientist types know...hippies and M-TV really know whats going on.
I can not believe you belive in global warming after we just had the coldest winter in more than a decade. Also global tempatures have not risen in 5 years.

I still can't believe that over a third of Americans are illiterate and over half don't graduate high school.
The global warming alarmists are learning about the positive effects of Carbon Dioxide, but ignore it.
In the meantime, they are going to rake in all the cash they can.

It's hard to believe we were lied to about taxes, isn't it.
Now, thanks to Al Gore and his buddies, we can expect a federal carbon tax soon. California is trying it now. I guess we will see how gullible America is during this voting cycle.
What this means for the average citizen is: if you have more than two children, have more than one car, have a car with mileage too high (as determined by your favorite politician), have more garbage than average, a higher electric bill per person than average or any other usage higher than they determine your carbon footprint to be, then you will pay a carbon tax.
A greater scam than that is being able to pay for a carbon credits to be able to claim that you are "carbon neutral."
I agree with the founder of the weather channel. We should take those people to court, for fraud, who promote the false global warming and accept the carbon credits.
The data is clear and the majority of scientists agree that Carbon Dioxide can not cause global warming. The only scientists who still believe it are part of the United Nations council on climate change and others whose grants and income depend on their testimonies . They are liable too.
I agree we should all conserve energy, drill for more oil domestically, become energy independent, develop hydrogen and alternate powered vehicles and appliances and leave our planet in better shape for our children. I am not willing to line the pockets of lawyers who claim to be environmentalists just because they tell us to.
As long as people are ignorant enough to believe the lies, then we will continue to be taxed to support the lies.
People, it is time now to vote out these thieves and scammers once and for all.
Freedom is worth fighting for. Taxation without representation is worth fighting against. Remember the big tea party over a 1/2% tax increase?

If I could afford the gas money to drive to the recycling center weekly, sure, I'd recycle ... Bring on curbside pickup!
