Has Idaho Lost Its Potatoes?

An interesting find in my change yesterday was a new 2007 Idaho quarter.
If I were to ask you what you thought would be on the Idaho quarter, what would you say? I've asked several people already, and they've all said a potato. I would have said the same.
That's incorrect though. It's a Peregrine Falcon, and I'm still trying to figure out why.
Can anyone enlighten me why this carnivorous -- sometimes even cannibalistic -- bird represents Idaho? Curious minds want to know.
UPDATE:
This bird may represent Idaho on the quarter, but it seems even those from Idaho don't necessarily approve. An online poll conducted by KTVB, an Idaho news group, indicated more than 75 percent of people who voted on the coin did not like the design.
According to this same news group, the Peregrine Falcon was picked because of Idaho's role in removing the raptor from the Endangered Species List.
Still, the potato seems like a better choice given Idaho grows more potatoes than any other U.S. region, producing about one-third of the U.S. production annually, according to the Idaho Potato Commission. The Commission also says that potatoes contribute $2.5 billion or 15% of Idaho's gross state product. Comments Showing most recent comments first [Show in chronological order instead] |

ANON I have taken a nap and since then I realize their are many other people out there who have more education than I,so my apologizies to everyone who was offended
A blue quarter with the Statue of Liberty would've been more than appropriate.
Though that may just be the Boise State Bronco in me talking.
Geez, onebyone, take a nap.
Remember "Cheers"? Maybe if Idaho had obtained Cliff Clavin's Potato that resembled President Nixon, it may have been better than the Falcon, but a plain old spud...would just be a dud. I think I would have selected scenes with skiing or snowmobiling or whitewater rafting or even golfing at Couer d' Alene. A truly beautiful State deserves more than a tater.
The following information is excerpted from the Idaho Statutes, Title 67, Chapter 45, Section 67-4512.
TITLE 67. STATE GOVERNMENT AND STATE AFFAIRS.
CHAPTER 45. STATE SYMBOLS.
SECTION 67-4512
67-4512. STATE RAPTOR DESIGNATED. The Peregrine Falcon is hereby designated and declared to be the state raptor of the state of Idaho.
Der ya go folks.
"Idaho is the only state that has adopted an official raptor and it was done with the help of fourth-grade students from Peregrine Elementary School in Meridian and from St. Joseph's Elementary School in Boise.
As a result of the efforts of the students, House Bill No. 712, to adopt the peregrine falcon as the official raptor of Idaho, was introduced and read for the first time on February 16, 2004. The bill moved rapidly through the Idaho House of Representatives and was read for the required 3rd time and approved by the House ten days later on February 26.
Read for the first time in the Idaho Senate on February 27, House Bill No. 712 was approved unanimously by the Senate on March 19, 2003.
Official State Raptor
Governor Dick Kempthorne signed the legislation adopting the peregrine falcon as Idaho's "... state raptor of the state of Idaho." Joining Governor Kempthorne for the signing ceremony were students from St. Joseph's and Peregrine elementary schools, Bill Burnham, President of the Peregrine Fund (holding "Jess," a male falcon) and Tom Cade, founder of the Peregrine Fund.
Governor Kempthorne commended the elementary school children:
"You all had an idea. You talked about it in your classrooms and then that idea came to the State Capitol and it continued to grow and grow, and now it's going to become law. You're awesome, all of you."
The peregrine falcon was the first species protected under the Endangered Species Act and its recovery is considered the most successful ever undertaken."

Actually, the state bird of Idaho is the Mountain Bluebird, not the Peregrine Falcon!!!!!!! I just love the way people who disagree with someone's opinion is quick to throw insults. What happened to just answering a question posed to the community in a nice manner?? Are we forgetting to teach our children the old saying, if you can't saying anything nice, don't say anything at all? I think it is a fair question, and I hope that someone finds out the reason the people of Idaho put the falcon on it's quarter, I would bet that it is an interesting story.
potatoes from idaho? says who? please check your facts. the bag says this and you buy them. just a question: what is the state bird of idaho? you'v got to be a bloomfield grad.
