Community needs to help keep parks safe

It can't be easy being a law enforcement officer in a small city or town.

And Greene County is filled with many small cities and towns.

One or two people can't be everywhere at once, and keeping everyone happy is probably impossible.

So what can we do to keep our parks free of trouble and in good shape? I'm not sure anyone has the perfect answer.

The Linton City Council recently passed an ordinance that closes Humphreys Park from midnight to 4 a.m. each day. According to Mayor Tom Jones and Linton Police Chief Troy Jerrell, some activity was taking place that was illegal (drugs).

A couple of years ago the Lyons Park was vandalized, and the Bloomfield Park has had trouble as well the past few years.

The parks are for everyone, but unfortunately a few can ruin it for an entire city or town.

The police can't sit at any park for 24 hours to make sure nothing happens. But more patrols can help, and I know that's exactly what the Linton Police Department is doing.

Residents need to step up and help with this problem. Attend the next Bloomfield or Lyons town council meeting or Linton and Jasonville city council meetings.

Don't sit back and hope the problem goes away. It takes community involvement for anything good to happen.

Our parks are an important part of Greene County. Let's keep it that way.

It is such a shame that some kids are sent to the park to spend their day without anyone being responsible for them, kids bringing pellet guns to the park and shooting kids, kids riding motorized vehicles on the park grounds, children exposing themselves to young children playing there, groups of kids in the shelter houses smoking and hollering curse words at the other kids playing there, it is not safe for the good children to be there alone. I for one will not allow my kids to be there alone.

The Lyons Park Band Stand was vandalized days before this year's Strawberry Festival. Then less than two weeks later it(Band Stand) was vandalized again, plus both park bathrooms. This is very upsetting because most of the improvements and repairs are done by volunteers just trying to make Lyons a better place to live and enjoy. I hope someone will do the right thing and turn the vandals in on Green County Crime Stoppers 812-847-5463 or to the local police. The good thing about small towns is that almost everyone knows everyone and it not easy to get away anything with out someone knowing. Please do it!!!

I was in the park recently & heard some really foul language coming from some the teens, it was awful.

I know one parent took their child & left the park as a result. In a case like this, I wished I had a cell phone & would have called the LPD. I know it is not illegal to use profanity, but it would have been worth it to call & see what happened.
