It was a great summer on the course!
Posted Tuesday, July 27, at 8:20 AM
We say it every summer, but here it is again almost August and I'll say it again, "Wow summer has flown by!" This has been an especially good summer as I've played some of my best golf heading into my final year at Ball State University.

Kicking off the summer, qualifying for a Duramed Future Tour event was an unexpected way to begin my summer. Entering the qualifier was a last-minute addition to my summer schedule, and I'm glad I did! Although I didn't play as well as would have liked, I learned a lot from the experience and am thankful for the opportunity.

Next, I headed into the Indiana Women's Golf Association portion of my summer tour. First was the Indiana Women's Open at Wood Wind Golf Club in Westfield. My first round was less than my best (80), and I put myself in a tough spot heading into the final round. I bounced back nicely with a final round of 1 over 73, and a tie for fourth.

Just before the IWGA State Amateur I hit the links at Phil Harris for the Greene County Open. I enjoy playing in the event as it's a chance to play close to home and compete with friends. Even though I didn't quite make the championship flight, I did win the first flight!

At the state amateur I had my career low of 70 in the second round and was in third place heading into the final round. I didn't do quite as well on the last day (77, fifth place), but I did witness great golf as my two playing partners battled it out to the very end. The eventual winner (Milena Savich of Carmel and a member of the Georgia women's golf team) made an eagle putt on the par 5 16th and a tough birdie putt on the 18th hole to clinch the title.

The final tournament of my summer was the Terre Haute Women's City Match Play Championship. And boy did it start with a bang! After firing a 9 under 63 in the qualifying round, I had a feeling it would be a challenge defending my title for the third straight year. My first match was again Eileen Mann, and I won 8 and 7. The next two matches would not be so easy. I faced Diana Price in the semifinal match. We went back and fourth several times throughout the day, but I was 1-up heading to the last hole. I made an easy 2-putt par to halve the hole and win the match. The championship match would be a hard-fought match to the end.

I faced Mackenzie Mack in the final match. She recently graduated from ISU and was a four-year member of the ISU women's golf team. At the turn I was 2-up after birding No. 9. Mackenzie would go on to win holes 11 and 14 to even up the match. I came back and won 16 but Mackenzie would return with a good up and down on the long par 3 17th. A wayward drive left we with a tough punch shot on the par 4 18th hole. I managed to get it to the fringe, but Mackenzie hit the green in regulation. I hit about a 6-foot par putt to force the match into extra holes. So back to No. 1 we went. No. 1 is a very short par 4 that is reachable off the tee (in fact I hit 3-wood). Neither one of us hit a great shot, but had good looks at the green. Unfortunately I got a little quick over the ball and thinned my shot over the green. Somehow I managed to save par with yet another long putt to send the match to yet another hole.

My drive on the par 4 second was sitting in great shape while Mackenzie had some tree limbs in her way. I came up a foot short of the green, but had an easy up and down for par. Mackenzie hit one of the limbs, which knocked her ball down and short of the green. She would chip up to about 4 feet. After taking a good look at my chip I decided to play a bump and run. I figured that was my best option for chipping it in and ending the match. I pulled from every past experience, and knowledge of golf, both physical and mental, took a deep breath and executed the exact shot I envisioned. I followed the ball into the hole with an emphatic fist pump as I clenched my third straight Terre Haute Women's City Championship.

All in all I would have to say that this has been my best summer of golf. I've truly grown as a golfer both in ability and mentally. Just a few years ago I don't think I would have been able to remain calm to pull out a victory in such pressure a situation. I have to thank my coaches at Ball State for that. They've been excellent in teaching us how to handle the ups and downs of golf. In addition, they've been able to provide sports psychologists to aid us as well. To young athletes in all sports, I would highly recommend sports psychology. Learning how to control your thoughts and emotions during competition can dramatically enhance your performance.

Also, thank you to my dad for caddying this summer. He does a great job helping me on the course. It's always nice to have someone to bounce your thoughts off of and agree with you (well most of the time we agree!! Haha!). I can't forget to thank my mom, as she makes sure Dad and I have plenty to eat and drink while we are on the course. I never get too far before she asks if I put on sunscreen (which I tend to "forget" to do quite often!).

Although I am heading into my last season as a student-athlete, I plan on continuing my education at the graduate level. As of right now my plans are to stay at Ball State University and be a graduate assistant with the women's golf team. Who knows, maybe I'll write about my coaching experiences next!

Thank you to all who read my blog. I really enjoyed writing and appreciated all of your support and encouragement!

May you always hit the fairway, green, and one putt!

Playing with the pros
Posted Friday, June 11, at 8:52 AM

A dream came true earlier this week. I qualified for a professional golf tournament at Mason, Ohio, just outside of Cincinnati. It's called the Teva Championship, and is part of the Duramed Futures Tour, a developmental tour for the LPGA. It's the same as Triple A in baseball...

Posted Friday, April 30, at 7:47 AM

After such a successful spring season, it was only fitting that we have a program best finish at the Mid-American Conference Championship. Our second-place finish is the best in school history, but the awards didn't end there. Senior Kirsty O'Connor was awarded the MAC Sportswoman of the Year award. ...

Master's Sunday at IU Invitational
Posted Sunday, April 11, at 7:06 PM

It's Master's Sunday, and we were about to begin our final round as well. Coach told us before the round to use what we've learned about the course to our advantage. With tricky greens, shot placement was key. The team responded by posting our second lowest round of the spring season, 294. Yes, the coaches will be wearing skorts at the MAC championship!...

Tough Start, Better Finish at the Saluki Invitational
Posted Wednesday, March 31, at 7:50 AM

Golf is a funny game. An entire team of great golfers can all play well on the same day and break school records, or the same group of golfers can play poorly on the same day. Unfortunately, the latter is what happened this past weekend. Sunday's opening round at the Southern Illinois Saluki Invitational was not our best effort...

Third Straight 6th Place Finish for Cardinals
Posted Thursday, March 25, at 8:06 AM

After Monday's marathon, Tuesday's final round of 18-holes seemed like a sprint to the finish line. Nonetheless, the course was still playing very long after additional rain Monday afternoon. Once again, the team finished 6th in a very strong field. ...

Soggy Day on the Links
Posted Wednesday, March 24, at 8:38 AM

It was a wet one out on the links today, as we started competition in the John Kirk Panther Invitational near Atlanta. Host site, Eagle's Landing golf course, was in tough shape as a result of excess rain the past several days. Despite the tough conditions we managed to shoot good scores and are currently in 5th place out of 13 teams...

Life of a College Athlete
Posted Thursday, March 18, at 10:31 AM

Every year we say, "Once we get through February conditioning and practice it will be smooth sailing!" What my teammates and I somehow forget is that traveling and playing golf is just as tough. Then again playing is a lot more fun than running and lifting (no offense Mary, we love your workout! Haha!)...

History Making Performance for the Cardinals
Posted Friday, March 12, at 11:36 AM

When we set out on the challenge of playing two tournaments back to back I wasn't sure what to expect. Needless to say we exceeded all expectations with two 6th place finishes and multiple school records broken. Wednesday's final round of the UNLV Spring Invitational ended what became a history-making tournament. Five school records were either tied or broken...

Indiana Weather in the Desert
Posted Wednesday, March 10, at 12:30 AM

We went into yesterday's round with no expectations, and lit up the golf course. Today, playing in the last wave of tee times, there were a few more butterflies and thoughts of what could be. The conditions today were tougher, with cooler temperatures, a little rain/snow, and wind. Toward the end of the round the sun came out and the wind died down...

Two School Records: Cain 69, Team 289
Posted Monday, March 8, at 11:31 PM

After an eventful van ride from Rio Verde, AZ to Boulder City, NV with our driver Doug, we finally made it to our hotel. As much as we all just wanted to go to bed, we had to stay up and unpack all of our wet clothes, clubs, towels, shoes, and hats. Basically, whatever we had with us, or on Coach's cart, was drenched...

Kelly and Team Finish 6th
Posted Sunday, March 7, at 6:56 PM

When we left home Wednesday afternoon an umbrella was a last-minute thought as we packed for spring break. I mean, we are going to be in the desert. The chances of it actually raining are slim right? That would be a big NO!! Despite the rainy finish to Sunday's final round, we moved up two places as a team (8th to 6th). ...

Ranch Party a "Hit"
Posted Saturday, March 6, at 11:04 PM

The ranch dinner is always a success, but tonight's seemed especially fun. Kristtini and Autumn were tearing up the dance floor with several of the host "moms." While playing college golf you get to know your competitors on the course. However, we don't get to see each other outside of golf very often. That makes tonight very unique. It gives us all a chance to just relax and have fun...

Practice Round Coverage
Posted Thursday, March 4, at 11:56 PM

The practice round is complete and sun burns are just beginning. Spring break golf has officially begun! If you've never played a desert course you know how different it is from playing in the Midwest. You have to be able to adapt your game for the additional roll, making the practice round key...
