My wife loves to garden, she has a vegetable garden, butterfly garden and many other plants around the house. Which means a lot of flowers. I'll give you the short list just for example; She has Spider Plants, Hostas, Petunias, Butterfly Bush, Roses, Begonias, Seduims, Hummingbird Vine, Honeysuckle, Day Lilies, Lilac Bush.

With all these flowers we have hummingbirds around our place. They zip around from flowers to feeders we see them perch in a near by tree to defend a feeder. We see them perch on a fence near one of our feeders and it gives us a chance to get a pretty good look at them and the best we can tell we are only seeing one species the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird. We can identify the male and the female the juvenile and the sub-adult.Does anyone know if there are other species of hummingbirds in our area?

I would LOVE to have your wife's garden! How beautiful it sounds and how wonderful that you are attracting hummingbirds. I have similar plants and flowers in my tiny landscape and I even hung 2 hummingbird feeders out this year for the first time (a gift from my beautiful daughter!) but so far, have only seen one hummingbird. This is all new to me... so do they only come at certain times?

I have never seen a hummingbird in my entire life. I figure they are imaginary like unicorns, dragons, and platypus. Heh heh. Platypus.

Just to share a humor Hummingbird story... Several years ago, my husband and I were visiting his aunt and family in Wisconsin. She had several plants on her patio as well. One morning, her husband stepped outside for a minute. When he returned, his head was swaying and he had a bit larger than a softball red whelp on his forehead... right between the eyes.

We all looked at him and said "Are you alright? What happened?" His reply, as his head was still swaying.... "Hummingbird".

We too have several hummingbirds and love to take pictures of them. But, we try to stay out of their way.

I've only seen the one kind. Humming birds are great to watch! In the early spring they come to the windows and look in. They seem to know where their food comes from. If you have your feeders where you can sit close to them, the humming birds will get right in your face and give you a good looking over. I was really surprised at how much noise they make. And they way they fight with each other! We had to move our feeders away from the deck because of the cats and because the raccoons were tearing up the feeders while drinking the food.

I've read that there are TWO types of humming- birds in Indiana. The Ruby Throated and the Rufous (a orangish/brown colored hummer), though I've only ever spotted the Ruby Throated hummingbird in the hordes that drain my back porch feeders every summer.
