McBride more than just a coach

One of the many pleasures of my job as a sports writer is meeting a select few people that make a positive impact on people's life outside of a basketball court, football field or baseball and softball diamonds, etc.. Former Bloomfield boys basketball and cross country head coach, Ron McBride fits this billing to a tee. McBride is now the athletic director for the Cardinals -- which not letting him continue his coaching duties is not a smart move in my opinion -- but his love for the sports teams he once guided is still just as passionate as before. Last week during the Greene County boys and girls cross country invitational, it was hard to determine if McBride was still guiding the Cardinals or just a vocal fan of the sport. He could be spotted on the side of the course giving encouraging words to his former runners as they passed by and rooting them on. It was during this time that while conversing with McBride -- when there were a break from athletes passing by -- that reassured me that he is more than just someone that shares a common passion about sports. He also cares just as much, if not more, about peoples lives -- and just not his former athlete's lives. Over the past year or so, every time I have spoken with McBride, whether it be in person -- such as last week -- or on the phone, he always makes a point to go out of his way and ask how things are going with myself. This time last year, I was in the process of moving my then girlfriend (now ex) down here with me and trying to find her a job. McBride offered his help in this process as he went out of his way to set her up with a couple job interviews and so on. Even after the break-up he would continue to ask how things were going with me outside of work and so forth. Never once did I call on McBride for advice or help as I have come to realize this is in his natural being to offer his assistance in any way possible. When interviewing him after he became athletic director, McBride made clear that he was an educator first and everything else is on the back burner. "I am an educator first and foremost," McBride said the school board made it official of him becoming the new athletic director two months ago. "Winning and losing games was just one aspect of my job, it was really just a smaller part of my duties." Another example of McBride's care and concern for people also came last week at the cross country meet. Before the start of the meet, McBride was mingling around with a couple other athletic directors and some coaches and a former student/athlete caught his attention. He immediately dropped conversation practically in mid-sentence and wanted to know how his former pupil was doing after the first week of college. My first encounter with McBride was not a pleasant one however, but still memorable. I was covering McBride's Cardinals for the first time here and they were on the road at White River Valley. The host Wolverines handed the Cardinals their first defeat in Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference play that night by a score of 46-37. The Wolverines made more free-throws (27) that night than the Cardinals attempted (22). McBride bolted out of the locker room after a brief meeting with his team after the game. It was obvious he was not happy with the officiating or the Cards performance, as his first words were "I don't have much to say". Being the young and not so experienced sports writer that I was, I let my charming personality -- please hold back the laughs -- take over the interview. A couple questions later and I had managed to get the animated coach to cool down and 20 minutes later the interview was complete. My next meeting with McBride during post-game interviews I experienced the same guy that I have come to know over the last couple years. After every home game, McBride would invite me into the locker room and would always offer something to drink out of the cooler and made sure I felt right at home, no matter if they happened to win or lose. He has never been a person shy to voice his opinion -- which is one reason why maybe I have come to respect him so much -- and may not always be the most likable person during competition. But for now with his coaching days put on hold, one thing is for certain -- Ron McBride is more than just a coach that cares about the number of wins and championships. It's been a great pleasure to have the experience to see the competitor and the friend that McBride has become to this sports writer. I am sure that there are more great things to come his way. Biting my tongue.....
Understand completely, On The Blood Trail.
I'm with you.
Travis I agree Coach McBride is a special kind of a guy. Bloomfield has been fortunate to have him all of these years. Let's hope the torch he has passed on to John Bucher will continue the Cardinal tradition in a positive manner.
Wordmaster,
From the little time that I have been around coach Bucher when he was an assistant under coach hall, he also is very respectful and I know that this job was his dream job so I am sure that he also will make the entire Bloomfield community proud and continue an excellent tradition of basketball at Bloomfield.
As for the first two posts.........why even say anything at all? sounds like you both have personal agendas with coach McBride and this is not the place for that!
I know Bloomfield hasn't had the best of talent in recent years, but I fear that Coach Bucher has a tall task in front of him. I know that part of McBride's magic was that he could get lesser talent to compete against better teams through discipline and smart play on the court. It seems that Bloomfield is coming into quite a dry spell as far as talent goes and it is concerning that a new coach is coming on board who may not be able to get the discipline out of the kids that McBride did. I wish Coach Bucher all the best, but he may have a rough couple of years to start his career at BHS. Let's just hope the school board doesn't turn the boys basketball coach into the carousel that was the AD position.
TDavid,
I appreciate that you have a high opinion of Mr. McBride. It just so happens that I do not. Many of the very characteristics that you state endears you to Mr. McBride, I have seen the opposite! I am sure that you have access to my account info and I would be happy to discuss with you my family's personal experiences with Mr. McBride. So if you want "the rest of the story" give me a call.
As for your blog not being the place for this...get real! When you write an opinion piece, be prepared for dissenters. As far as I can tell, I have said nothing demeaning, disrespectful or slanderous.
I was always taught that if you could not say something nice to not say anything at all.
TDavid wrote a very nice article and many of us agree with him completely. Ron McBride is a very good coach and a very good man.
I respect that you have a different opinion on Coach McBride.
I will however pass on the offer to get "the rest of the story". I am the type of person that makes my own judgement on people and thus far he has done nothing but been a friend and displayed the utmost respect towards me.
McBride has a knack of making average players better. He also makes great players good.
McBride's an alright guy; I have nothing against him. He did an excellent job as a coach. But TDavid gets carried away with praise for him. Other issues have surfaced over the years; obviously years before TDavid became an expert on everything in Greene County....
"and yes I have bosses to answer to, but I have the luxury in this profession to write my articles and blogs from my point of view, whether or not you agree with them or not, but like i said before, whenever you are ready to quit hiding behind your screen name and want to give me "all the facts" maybe i will consider doing another story. but until i am convinced otherwise I stand behind my opinion the bloomfield athletic department is losing a big asset!!!!!!!!"
A little quote from Travis David himself. I guess he just wants the whole story when it fits his opinion.
No expert here, just very opinionated like all of you.
But this article is about what I think of Coach McBride on a personal level therefore what he may or may not have done to someone else is not going to change the fact that he has treated myself with the utmost respect and has became a friend.
So you all hiding behind screen names can blast me for all you want, thats my opinion on the matter just like you have an opinion on it.
But if it would make you feel better to tell your stories to me then feel free to give me a call or shoot me an email.
Thanks.
Ron was the best coach in Greene Co. for years, and is a class act on and off the court. He will be missed at all the Bloomfield games. Their games wont be the same without him on the sideline.
Bloomfield sports programs were hurt in recent
years by not hiring a AD from the school. Some
one with respect of other schools and most
importantly experience. (remember Glover?)
Making Coach McBride the AD is a excellent
choice. Anyone with the years of head coaching
will have critics. Some have voiced their opinions
on this page. Usually these voices are from those
whose kin did not see enough playing time or
quit because it was too much of a commitment.
Congratulations coach McBride! I know you will
do a great job.
