Week 1 dismantling of Colts provides excitement

Normally the start of the NFL season is an exciting time for a sports fanatic such as myself. This season however, I struggled with getting overly excited about the upcoming season.
Part was due to the fact that my Chicago Cubs sport the best record in the National League and are destined to make a strong playoff push that will hopefully end in late October and crowned World Series Champions, but all that is for another column later on in the fall. The other reason, is my football team, the Chicago Bears have a starting quarterback that had not made a meaningful start in nearly three seasons, in the form of Kyle Orton. I will go ahead and make the statement that I willingly open the flood gates to open with the position I stand on the Bears quarterback. I have been and will remain one of the biggest supporters for Rex Grossman. I still feel that he is the best option at quarterback on the roster, which is not saying a whole lot. With that statement, I had thoughts of skipping last Sunday night's opener against the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts entered the game as nearly two touchdown favorites, and with all the celebration of playing the first regular season game in their new $720 million stadium, I figured the spread was a slap in the face to the 2007 World Champs. Being the diehard fan that I am, I managed to turn the TV on right before half-time, as I was on the way back from Kokomo for the kickoff, and was shocked for lack of a better term to see the Bears with the lead heading into the locker room at intermission. As the game wore on, I kept waiting for the Colts to step up their game to a level the Bears would not be able to match, and bring all the Bears fans back down to reality. None of which happened, and gave me a new sense of excitement for this season. I still am not comfortable enough to go on record and state that I feel the Bears are Super Bowl contenders once again, but we do play in the NFC and anything can happen. Monday morning I picked up the Indianapolis Star to read about the game since I can not find a Chicago Tribune close by. So if any of you know where I can find one, please feel free to let me know. I quickly found out the Star failed to report on the game for Monday's edition due to the game not being over with before publication deadline. Are you serious? You mean to tell me, your local professional football team plays the first regular season game in their brand new stadium and against a team that is three hours away, and you can not extend deadline an extra hour? Now in this profession, I know all about deadlines and how they work, and there are times that we have stretch our deadlines out, namely on Friday nights for football games, HIGH SCHOOL football games, I might add. Now, what if the Colts would have been thrashing the Bears, like just about every critic outside of Chicago thought? Would there have been game coverage then? Back to the game itself now. I am still not sold on "Kyle Orton is our starting quarterback" -- famous words of Bears head coach Lovie Smith. He did do a good job of managing the game by not turning the ball over. But let's face it, the defense of the Bears is what decided this game, and also a revamped running attack by the Bears, mainly in the force of rookie Matt Forte. Now back to Grossman for a minute. I will make the brash statement that if Forte, or really any other running back except Cedric Benson, is in the starting backfield last season along with Grossman, Orton would still be on the bench this season, or maybe even in a different city as a second or third string quarterback. The Bears simply had no running game last season, and Grossman was doomed from the start. Yes, he is a little wild and likes to sling the ball around, but look at Brett Farve. Ok I promise not to mention Grossman anymore in this column. Back to the game. After reading some articles and fans comments from the game in numerous online publications and papers, the popular evaluation of the game was "Manning was not ready", "Manning just did not look like himself", "Dallas Clark left the game", "Joseph Addai left in the fourth quarter,". Excuses, excuses, excuses. Typical. How about trying this evaluation on for size -- the Bears had a game plan, executed the game plan, and simply walked into the Colts brand new stadium and gave them an ole fashion whooping. Plain and simple. At least for one week, the Chicago Bears looked like a typical Bears team -- smashmouth football -- aggressive defense and strong running game and force the opposing team into doing things they are not comfortable with. Sir Peyton dropped back for 49 passes, not a good formula for the Colts and winning. And for at least one week, this Bears fan has some reason to believe, this season may hold some promise after all.

Da Bears!!!
First off let me say, Wow..
You've got guts posting this in here..Second,
you missed the entire first half of this game and you're trying to break down what happened to the people who, without a doubt, watched it? I agree that the Colts got stomped, were outplayed, etc but I also think that Peyton was not himself. His timing was off pretty badly. He was overthrowing, under throwing, and just missing targets. It improved somewhat in the second half, but Marvin's fumble and the questionable 4th down call threw away any chance of winning.
As for your thought about the Bears being good this year..
Maybe..Forte looked pretty good, but can he make up for the lack of a quarterback? Time will tell I guess.
Hopefully Simmons will weigh in with an opinion soon. I'm confident he will have one.
Bench Soriano, Play Grossman. Sounds like a couple of great ideas to me.
You might try catching those late game stories on something called the Internet. Seems to work pretty well for most fans.
I wouldn't even know where to begin. You might try moving to Chicago, I'm fairly sure that they sell the Tribune up there. Or, if you know how to use your computer, just go to: http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/
Although I struggled through reading what was obviously a rough draft, I did get a good laugh, at 3am on a Saturday, with the Grossman-Favre comparison.
Also, I'm pretty sure that holding the press for the delivery of a major metropolitan newspaper that goes statewide is somewhat different than waiting on scores of High School games at the GCDW. Is there a Saturday edition?
If Grossman would have started he would have turned the ball over 3 times.
This is a classic blog by this "sportswriter". Comparing putting out the Daily World and the Indianapolis Star in terms of deadlines is Hilarious.
The paper better send BJ to the big events, because your press pass must be drawn out with color crayon.
Take it easy, he's young.
Well I will admit that I was wrong on lashing out about the Star like that, was just a little irritated thats all.
But hey,the way I look at it, with some of the "hilarious" things this "sportswriter" types in his blogs, it gives you and simmons a chance to do some more bashing of this opinionated "sportswriter", which for you to make comments on here, even if they just to take some shots at me, it means that you are reading the material, which that is part of the job of a writer, is to make readers click on their stories right???
so I guess I have succeeded in that regards right?
thanks for helping out.
and if you ever would like to carry on a conversation I will provide the rest of my contact information.

I never looked at it that way. I guess you're right. Great job.
Professionally said there Mr. David… hehehe Looks like you are coming around as to the responses on your blogs but I will give you props for standing up for Grossman even though I am a Colts fan… I will however state that it isn't fare to take out comments on an injured player effecting a game because you never really know if him (Clark) being in could have changed the outcome!!! Any Dallas Clark fan knows that he makes major plays for the colts by receiving or blocking so a combination of all those players in the postitions that they play in would spell disaster for any team!!! Thats all I'm saying…
Colts over Bears in the Super Bowl...that still has to hurt. I'm a Colts fan first, but I pull for Da Bears in a close second.
Grossman vs. Orton- Orton won't lose you games, but he won't win them either. Grossman can win a game for you(then again he can also lose them frequently).
Forte had a nice game against the Colts run defense, which is notoriously bad early in the year. They aren't built to play from behind.
No excuses, but Manning didn't look well. Literally, I was waiting for him to pass out.
This week...Colts still didn't look good, but they found a way to win. Bears had moments, yet they found a way to lose.
Being at the first game in the Colts shiny, new stadium it was a joy to watch the Bears whoop up on Manning and crew. I was surprised at how many Colts fans were such sore losers. I was even more surprised at how many fans were leaving with nine minutes left in the game.
As for Grossman vs. Orton. I have been a Rex fan all along and after yesterday's game I am convinced that Orton cannot win a game if he needs to. Rex may have made some mistakes, but at least he showed he could put the team into position to win a game at the end.
The Grossman/Favre comparison is one that was very common when Rex was coming out of college so the author is not that far off in posting that.
Yes, I find great entertainment in reading your blog. I know I need to temper my "shots". I agree with BMH, you're young and I need to take it easy on you. I'll try to do better.
Eggman, he wasn't making the comparison when Rex came out of college. He made it last week. And I think you'll have to agree, Grossman has shown us since then he is no Brett Favre.
Also, young man, your invite to a "conversation" seems a little like asking me to take this outside. Meet me at your desk, you know where that is, down the street by the pay phone. Keep up the good work, you might get a Promotion to obituary writer. Sorry, that didn't last long.
Well I find it hilarious you and everyone else that takes shots at me, so please don't let up keep it going.
And it wasn't an invitation to step outside, I was just giving you my contact information incase you or anyone else wanted to come from behind your screen name and carry on an actual conversation like adults instead of all the insults.
but like I mentioned to one upset reader who actually emailed me instead of taking some jabs on here, I don't think that any journalist enters this profession to try and win a popularity contest, but then again thats just this "sportswriter's" opinion.......
You'll not get any more comments (jabs or insults) from me on this blog. You're on your own. Now you have one less reader of your articles.
You wrote, "so I guess I have succeeded in that regards right?"
I'd hate to think that my comments were somehow deluding you into thinking that you are a successful "sportswriter".
My picture and real name are on the front page of this web, just in case you don't know who I am and I'm never hard to find.
I'm not as big a man as old simmons (I can't fit into 32" pants either, so I guess that might not be true). He chose to ignore you and that is ultimately the right decision. I just can't, just as I can't look away when I pass a car accident. I'm not proud of it, just the way it is. Maybe this could be your schtick. Be the "sportswriter" that writes just to see if he can get the most comments. Good goal.
So keep "writing" and I will keep commenting. Because in a time when things seem so hard, I need a target that is so easy.
My contact info is on my business card. I believe you have one.
Grossman is very similar to Favre in that he makes stupid decisions that are detrimental to his team.
