Expect the unexpected this baseball season

Something must be wrong in major league baseball right? We are less than two weeks away from the all-star break and the Chicago Cubs still sit atop of the National League Central standings. In fact my beloved Cubbies still have the best record in the National League.
To further confuse people, the Tampa Bay Rays, formerly known as the cellar dwelling Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the American League East, are at the top of the mountain in their division. And if you are still not convinced that something strange is going on, the Rays have the best record in the bigs and are coming off a three game sweep of the defending World Champion Boston Red Sox, who they now lead by three games heading into the weekend. As the Rays seem to be getting comfortable in the drivers seat in a very tough division, the Cubs have fallen off mark the last couple weeks. After having their 14 game home winning streak snapped last week by the Baltimore Orioles, who have been a pleasant surprise through the first half of this season as well, the Central division leaders proceeded to get swept by cross-town rival and hated White Sox before splitting a four game set with the San Francisco Giants. The lovable losers still carry a meager two and half game lead over the rival St. Louis Cardinals heading into this weekends three game series against the Red Birds. For a much needed extra lift, the north siders will have their ace of the pitching staff, Carlos Zambrano making his return from the disabled list in the opener Friday night. While on the DL, "Big Z" missed three starts and the Cubs lost all three of those games in which he was scheduled to start. Also on the DL has been the $136 million man, Alfonso Soriano, who has missed the last three weeks after breaking his hand when hit by a pitch. Although this Cubs fan, feels the team is better off with their highest paid player watching from the dugout. But then again I was calling Jim Hendry and all the Cubs higher-ups even name in the book for signing Jim Edmonds two months ago. The 38-year old, who I have called the "biggest cry baby" in all of baseball, on numerous times, has been rather impressive since joining the club. In 36 games, he has hit close to .300 with eight long balls and 24 RBIs and still is one of the best defensive center fielders in the game. Although I still believe that he cringes and starts to tear up every time he brushes up against the outfield wall or dives for a ball. But then again maybe that's just because he is pushing 40! Now since my Celtics won their first NBA championship in 22 years last month, I most likely will not be lucky enough to have two championship teams in the same year, but I am still sticking to my pre-season prediction that the Cubs will finally win their first World Series in a century. There are still some question marks on this years team, but I will make a bold prediction and say the Cubs nation is one trade away from securing that coveted championship. The one trade that will make "next year" this year is C.C. Sabathia. With the Cleveland Indians falling faster than the popularity of Isiah Thomas in New York, the big left hander will land in the blue and white pin stripes of the Cubs before the trading deadline. With Sabathia and Zambrano the Cubs will possess a dominating 1-2 punch on the hill similar to the 2001 Diamondbacks when they had a healthy Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson. Only the Cubs duo will be a lot younger. Sticking with my predictions, I will publicly go out on a limb and say the Colorado Rockies will get their act together and have a second half run just as they did a year ago and win the National League West. The Florida Marlins will come out of the East with the fighting Phillies winning the National League Wild Card. Setting up the Cubs against the Phills, who the Cubs will sweep, and the Rocks will take care of the Marlins. And the Cubs will take care of business in six games against the Rockies, with me in the stands. Over in the junior circuit, my surprise pick will be the Texas Rangers surging ahead and winning the West, while the Twins will edge out the White Sox for the Central crown and the BoSox will overtake the upstart Rays in the East. But I still see the Rays making the post season, with a one game playoff against the Yankees for the Wild Card. Red Sox over the Rangers in the playoffs and the Rays over the Twins, and are you ready for this?? The Rays over the BoSox in a grueling seven games, with game seven going 14 innings and a former Cub, Cliff Floyd knocking in the game winning run, to set up the most unlikely World Series imaginable, the Cubs and Rays. After being swept in the regular season by the Rays, the Cubs will return the favor, only starting a riot in the Windy City. With that being said, I am rooting hard for the American League to win the All-star game so that game four of the World Series will be at the greatest ball park ever, Wrigley Field. One of my good "best buddies" made the prediction before the start of the season, that the World Series would be the Cubs and Royals and I laughed so hard that my drink just about came back out through my nose, so while typing this column I choose not to have anything to drink for that reason and I hope that none of you are either.

Well as a life long Cubs fan I can say that I've spent time in both stadiums and I can say that both fans are not the greatest to be around. There are Cub fans that get drunk and just act like a one year old that just had his cookie taken away. But I've also been to St. Lou and one game the Cubs were losing and I started to leave at the top of the ninth inning. I was at the top of the stadium which was still a good place to watch the game. And by the time I got to the bottom to leave I had been called at least 10 different names and asked to step out back at least three times. The funny thing was that two of the times it was by a guy that was with 3-4 other guy's and he was the smallest of them all... LOL... And I was with my girlfriend. No one threw anything at me or anything like that just words. But still could have been better. So it happens everywhere. I've also been to Cincy and about the same thing happened there. Even though the Cubs were winning there. There are always going to be good fans and bad fans. And there are going to be some in each section. But that goes both ways for both teams and all teams for that matter. The reason you might see it more at the cub games is because there are more cub fans at the game then any other team brings. So you run a bigger chance to find the butts of the Cub fans. But just as you can say you need to be knowledgeable about the game you need to be knowledgeable about the fans and know these types of things and expect them at times.... Just as I know as a cub fan when we play St. Lou or the whitesox that there are going to be bad fans or fans saying things that are not nice. It's just an understanding. Doesn't mean I'm going to jump in but does mean that I have less fun because I don't want to be around any of those fans even if they are rooting for my cubbies... :)

..and since when are you supposed to act civilized towards an opposing teams fans. That is very "unbaseball like".
In 1906 ole 3 finger Brown was actually beat up by New York fans after we won there to take the pennant.
Americans are such moddle-coddies now we cant expect people to really have passion for there sports clubs. It might come off as being un civilized. In Wrigley-ville you can still see baseball the ole fashioned way includeing fans pelting folks in Cardinals hats with beers and half eaten hot-dogs.
Classic....
I do believe that the Cubbies were orginally referred to as the west siders....Chicago has grew since the inception of the league.
Aye Matey, Aye.
Such a convincing and well written argument. You've got me, I give up.
soriano is a very good ballplayer, i am not saying that he isnt. I just dont like a player that tells his manager that he is going to play this position and bat in this spot or else he is going to sit.
i really dont think that lou would tolerate that in his younger days.
and back to the fans, i dont know what all happened when you was there, but I do know that all fan bases have those types of fans, I am just saying that the majority of the true fans are not that way at all. and wrigley is a great place to watch a game as well.
but i am sure that come september things will be pretty interesting in teams vying for the playoff positions, I just hope that the Cubs are still in the drivers seat then
I don't enjoy the arrogance of Red Sox or Yankee fans either, for the most part. I am a Yankee fan too and have been for quite some time, but that doesn't mean that I condone the behavior of poor losers and poor winners. The reason I brought up the subject was because I really enjoy going to St. Louis to see ballgames. They probably have the best fans in baseball and it makes the game pleasant for people who understand and really love the game.
It would be nice for the Cubs to trade Soriano to some team that would appreciate his worth. As long as you would have your "lovable losers" losing with your type of "true team player", they may as well save some salary.
You sure have a tremendous amount of animosity built up against a very good ballplayer. When he comes back, he will play, because the team is managed by a guy who didn't come up in the Cub organization, he learned early on what it takes to win. Lou would rather have that .647 winning percentage, which will get him to the playoffs, rather than the .526 that you prefer, with your "true team player", which will preclude any visit to postseason baseball for the hapless Cubbies.
As far as worrying about the Brewers, you better worry about both the Brew Crew and the Cards because there will be no more than 2 teams coming from the Central Divsion to the playoffs. That, my friend, is a well known fact.
just stating my opinions like everyone else on here is entitled to do.
thanks.
i would rather have a true team player in the lineup everyday, someone who does all the little things that helps the team win instead of worrying about where he is batting at in the lineup and swinging for the fence everytime up. and someone who is not such a liability on defense.
and i am sure that being at a cubs and cardinals game you are going to have some rowdy fans there, how many cubs games do you attend throughout the season.
have you ever attended a red sox and yankees game??? I am sure that one could draw the same assumption of either of their fans after attending one of those games.
you obviously didnt see the way the Cubs fans treated Roger Clemens a few years back when he was going for win No. 300 at Wrigley, I was there at that game in the bleachers and even though Eric Karros spoiled that bid with a three run homer, the fans at Wrigley still gave Clemens the up most respect throughout the game and when he left.
and what about when Tom Glavine won his 300th game last season at Wrigley, the Cubs fans were totally gracious with him as well.
but say what you want, we all have our own opinions.
and yes I was dead wrong on the Sabitha deal, I have said all along that i am more afraid of the Brewers than the Cardinals, and now they just got a little more scarier!!!
The Cubs are 33-18 with Soriano in the lineup and 20-18 without him (stats are courtesy of Major League Baseball). As a true Cub fan, wouldn't you rather win more games? However, knowing the history of the Cubs and their die hard fans, it makes a lot more Cubs' baseball sense to keep one of the best hitters in baseball on the bench and have a .526 winning percentage than play him and have a .647 winning percentage.
We went to see the Cubs and Cards last Friday. St. Louis is one of the best places in the world to see Major League Baseball. Not just because of the ballpark, but because the fans are so knowledgeable and courteous to opposing teams. But when the Cubs are in town, St. Louis is not a great place to be anymore. The Cubs' fans were totally obnoxious. It was a good ballgame, which the Cubs won 2-1 and it became obvious to us that the Cubs have been losers for so long that their fans are still acting like losers. There is a simple grace in acknowledging the quality of game played by your opponent, especially when you win. Cubs' fans should learn that someday, if they want to be winners.
Sounds like the odds are better on Sabathia joining Ben Sheets and the Brewers instead of Zambrano and the Cubs.
Oh well, maybe Next Year for the Cubbies....
yes, that was a mistake, got in little bit of a hurry when i was typing the story.
thanks for pointing that out, though.
and yes, I am one of the biggest Cubs fan you will meet.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the Cubs are referred to as the north siders aren't they? Must be a huge Cubs fan.
