School Boards overshadow outstanding performances

Over the past couple of weeks, the area has encountered some pretty amazing sports accomplishments from team standpoints as well as individual performances.

The spring athletic teams in Greene County have piled up a softball sectional championship and two baseball sectional champions. Three track and field individuals have also been crowned sectional and regional champions, advancing to the state finals last week. And one individual was nearly crowned a state champion. In fact the spring sports season has been a memorable one as many school records have fallen by the waist side. But despite all the great games and remarkable efforts from our young student athletes, the sad truth is they are all overshadowed.

Who would be so selfish as to try and take away the spotlight from our future teachers, coaches, doctors, lawyers, government officials or whoever else these talented young students may become? The answer is our current educators, administration and even parents.

I have truly been blessed to become aquatinted with many of our area athletes, coaches and other community members over the past six months that I have become a Greene County transplant. I still haven't decided if being recognized when in public is a good thing or not. Often times people will approach me and say "hey aren't you the sports guy?" Sometimes I will fire back with a "well it just depends on what you thought of the article you read!" Just kidding on that part. But I am a pretty straight laced person and I consider my writing to be a reflection of what I strongly believe in. Although my celebrity status has not reached Tony Romo level, over the past couple weeks many people in the community have either approached me in public with some questions or sent emails.

One would only think that the questions and comments would be like "hey did you get a chance to watch that (Lindsey) Stevens girl from Eastern Greene run the hurdles" or "man those Shakamak track boys are really something special" or "do you think that Shakamak can continue their post season success and is Eastern Greene the real deal". But the hottest topics has been the ongoing feud with coaching and administration decisions by school boards.

A less publicized incident happened at White River Valley as volleyball coach Becky Borter was asked to resign from her coaching duties. When Borter declined, the board voted not to renew her coaching contract. To my knowledge Borter has done an exceptional job with her teams over the years and is very well respected by her players. But Borter was dubbed as not winning a sectional title, and when she stood up to board members to fight for what she believed in board members frowned upon Borter and ultimately choose an alternative route for the direction of the volleyball program.

More recently the Bloomfield school board decided to take a different direction and not retain the services of interim athletic director Rick Hudson. Hudson filled the void left when Andy Ross un-expectantly left for the same position at a different school before the start of this past school year.

Not to disrespect newly appointed athletic director Monica Abernathy, who many claim to be "wet behind the ears still" (she is only 26 years young), but Mr. Hudson leaves some pretty big shoes to fill. A message to Ms. Abernathy would be to program Mr. Hudson's cell phone number on speed dial, as I am positive that he can handle the duties better in his sleep than most can ever dream of. And I am sure that Mr. Hudson would drop anything that he may be doing at the time, if he knew he could help someone out, even his predecessor.

Hudson bailed out the school without much of a notice, and was rewarded with a second retirement present, so to speak, after one very successful year. What a thank you, huh?

And lastly, Linton-Stockton lost their girls basketball coach after a special board meeting last week.

Reluctantly Mike Riggleman inherited the disarray program eight years ago. After a short time Riggleman, who also teaches mathematics at Linton-Stockton, fell in love with the job.

Although Riggleman's teams did not win any post-season titles, he did not get discouraged. Instead he developed a passion and dedication towards the program and has built a once so called doormat for other teams, into a highly competitive and respected team.

Riggleman claims that before no one else wanted the job, and now that there is a particular interest in the job, he was "blindsided" and forced out.

One thing is for sure, the success of the basketball team in the near future will be of direct correlation to the efforts Riggleman has put forth in his seven seasons.

Now that I have drawn a pretty big picture I will finally draw my conclusion.

I attended the special board meeting last week at Linton-Stockton. I had never attended a board meeting before and wasn't for sure how the open floor portion of the meeting worked, so I wasn't for sure if I was allowed to ask questions or just simply voice my opinion. I, now regretfully, remained silent.

My final thoughts are, why do we allow the fate of our leaders to be determined by a group of individuals who have relatively no specialty in that area? I, as long as many others, would like to know how many games the board members at Linton-Stockton and WRV have attended during the terms of Riggleman and Borter. Or how many practices they have attended. Have the coaches received any type of evaluation other than disgruntled parents?

Sadly these questions will not be answered, only in speculation, due to members wish to not comment and are not obligated to state their reasoning. These matters are handled in executive meetings, which are not open to the public.

It's easy to look at wins and losses record, but how fair is that? Lost in the midst of everything is the kids, they are the ones who are affected the most, yet the virtually have no say in the matter. Yes one athlete spoke up at the board meeting and letters from others were submitted, but what good does that do when the decisions were already made? What message are we sending to our kids? Obviously not a very good or clear one. Or perhaps it is very clear, and that is keep your friend close and your enemies closer!

Educators, coaches and administrators play an instrumental part in a student's life. Speaking from personal experiences, I have had teachers and coaches who have influenced the person I am today. And it's a shame when those who are next generation look up to are removed.

Good article, Travis. Bloomfield should have a clean sweep, new sup, new prin and new board of directors!

The reason Mr. Hudson was not retained as the AD is pure and simple, Principal Parsley didn't want him, and the Superintendent doesn't stand up to him, ala, tail wagging the dog?? The Board was told of Parsley instigating someone to write an email and complain about Hudson, yet they still didn't give Hudson consideration. Shame, shame. Hopefully, the Board will all be voted out next time they're up.

and my name is George Popatanopolis......nice to meet you as well

Not saying I know the whole story. I'm just saying you don't either. I'm saying you have formed your opinion without all of the facts.

And that "big asset" line was not very nice. Mr. Hudson has lost quite a bit of weight the past few years.

By the way, not hiding. My name happens to be Paul Instigator. Nice to meet you.

Not sure why all of my blogs get deleted but I must be hitting the nail on the head and offending someone or someone is afraid to tell the truth!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Mr. David - there is a story here and a big one.

-- Posted by Big Red1 on Thu, Jun 12, 2008, at 9:52 AM

not saying that mr hudson should have been allowed to run things exactly the way he wanted to, but if you have a boss that is in TOTAL control of everything you do, then what is the point in being in charge of that position???????? why not just let the person that wants things done his EXACT way do everything?????

there should be guidelines to follow yes, there has to be some sort of structure, but to basically tell a person what he or she should do is ridiculous.

and yes I have bosses to answer to, but I have the luxury in this profession to write my articles and blogs from my point of view, whether or not you agree with them or not, but like i said before, whenever you are ready to quit hiding behind your screen name and want to give me "all the facts" maybe i will consider doing another story. but until i am convinced otherwise I stand behind my opinion the bloomfield athletic department is losing a big asset!!!!!!!!

and sorry bout the punctuation those keys tend to stick sometimes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not once did I "bash Mr. Hudson, nor did I judge his "abilities or disabilities". You just made that up totally out of thin air.

What I said is that some good people on the selection board made a decision. I am not including Mr. Parsley on that list.

You make the point that he did not perform his duties the way the higher ups thought he should. I don't know about you, but if I don't do things the way my boss wants, he fires me or doesn't renew my contract as was the case here. Are you saying you do things the way you want with no regard to your bosses terms and keep your job anyway? Well then you're a lucky man.

My whole point is that you are making your opinion on less than all of the facts. I admit maybe there should be full disclosure to the public on the reasons that contracts are not renewed, but that is a totally different argument.

And TDAVID get control of your puntuation. One question mark is plenty.

first of all never once did i say that mr hudson called in with scores, that is not his job, that is the coaches jobs. the job of an AD is to notify those who need to know of schedule cancelations or any other changes or announcements that the athletic program would need. I have never had a AD position but I am familiar with other duties, as far as contracts with other schools and games and bus routes and official contracts and everything else.

and who exactly are you to judge mr hudson on his abillities or inabilities as you say?????

I try and avoid heresay, but since board members are not inclined to give reasons, I can say that it appears mr hudson was not considered for the job because he handled his duties the way he felt best and not the way that higher ups wanted him to perform the duties.

you can hide behind your user name on here and post all the comments and bash mr hudson all you want, but your comments are not going to influence my opinion on the matter. if you feel like you have information that I or others dont know, you can feel free to contact me and I would gladly look into doing a story based on your information........

Tdavid, Do you realize how small of a part the interaction between an AD and the press is in relationship to the duties of an AD as a whole? Less than 2 percent I would imagine. You and your partners seem to think that since you had a good rapport with Mr. Hudson he must have deserved the job. I'm glad he made your tough job easier but you blame the school board and administration. I say that there are many other people in the know, that know that he was not the best man for the job. Is this new AD the best? I'm not sure. But some good people on the selection committee thought she was, and I will take the peoples opinion that are in the know over someone that got a few phone calls with some scores.

well whether my opinions are wrong or right, the main issue is about the development of the student athletes. hopefully the coaching changes will not affect the athletes in any negative ways, and I am not talking about from just a win/loss standpoint. there is a bond formed between coaches and athletes and adjustments can be hard. I was lucky and had the same coach in all my sports in high school and college, but I have also been a coach where I have replaced someone and know first hand how difficult getting that team chemistry back can be.

anyway.......I could go on and on bout things, but hopefully everything works out best in all the parties involved.......

TDavid

Didn't mean to offend with incorrect terminology. Blog or post or whatever, i speak the truth. Where do i get my info? i have lived in this community all my life, i have kids who play sports, and i attend school board meetings. You seem like a nice enough guy. You're just wrong about some things. But in defense of the wrv school, they did the right thing.

-- Posted by DAISY123 on Mon, Jun 9, 2008, at 9:07 AM

and DAISY123,

where do you get your information from, would it be correct to say that your "blog" is one sided???? and for the record, you have posted COMMENTS, I posted a BLOG. and my column/blog is my opinion on certain subjects as well as you comments are your opinion. everyone is entitled to their own opinion and the purpose of my columns/blogs is just how I see things. am I right? maybe. am i wrong? maybe.

maybe in the near future Ill set up an online application for a special "board" to give rulings on all articles on here......

-- Posted by TDavid on Sun, Jun 8, 2008, at 2:26 PM

well if I was wrong at least I am admitting it. the whole point of the statement was ross left unexpectedly for another school, and hudson bailed out the school, bottom line!!!

-- Posted by TDavid on Sun, Jun 8, 2008, at 2:08 PM

Hey TDavid,

You "Heard"???? Ever think about checking facts before you print your column?

So, which is the correct info?

-- Posted by BloomburgBanter on Sat, Jun 7, 2008, at 12:29 PM

Not fair. You get to print one sided misinformation in the paper, but i cant't post the truth in a blog.

-- Posted by DAISY123 on Sat, Jun 7, 2008, at 9:35 AM

im sorry TDAVID, Daisy is right, so do you think WRV would can Borter because of her record, ha ha. This is highschool, not pro sports.

My comment got deleted for some odd reason!

-- Posted by cletus on Fri, Jun 6, 2008, at 8:23 PM

thanks for that information, I had heard that he accepted the same position elsewhere, but I could stand corrected. I will look into that more. thanks

-- Posted by TDavid on Fri, Jun 6, 2008, at 6:49 PM

I think your info regarding the absence of Mr. Ross is incorrect.

I spoke with Andy as he was leaving and he said he was excited about going back to being a teacher. It was his desire. As far as I know, he is not currently an athletic director. If you can confirm this, please let us know.

-- Posted by Greene County Patriot on Fri, Jun 6, 2008, at 3:40 PM

whats the point of attacking other teams or their coaches or in this case a former coach? does this make your players better or you a better coach??

you are right I haven't been here all that long, but I have been around plenty of coaches in all my school years and now reporting, I would like to think that I have a pretty good grasp on good qualities of coaches. like I have said numerous times, its not all about winning game and post season titles and all of that, AT THIS LEVEL!!!! high school is four years of a person's life that they will never experience again, a time where life lessons are learned, respect is earned and learned, and memories are made. I should clarify that last part, it should be where GOOD memories are made, not bad ones where parents, teachers and coaches squabble about this and that and end up dragging the kids into the situation.

you say that i dont know the coaches and that may be correct to a certain extent but after talking with numerous players from various teams I think I can draw a pretty good evaluation of the before mentioned persons. and really it should be the players thoughts and concerns and not about parents or board members or opposing coaches or anyone else........

Right on Minerfan

-- Posted by slaw on Fri, Jun 6, 2008, at 1:43 PM

Well slaw, you must know more than me?

-- Posted by bborter on Fri, Jun 6, 2008, at 10:31 AM

Coach Borter being let go has nothing to do with her record.

-- Posted by slaw on Fri, Jun 6, 2008, at 7:22 AM

Great article!

Leonard, yes, the Linton school board attempted to overshadow the student athletes in one case. Linton's softball team, parents, and fans learned of some school board members' plan to try to fire their head coach just before our sectional game. How was the timing for that?? Did those board members that voted against her even know it was sectional time?? Oh well, their plan did fail on that case ...

-- Posted by MinerBand on Thu, Jun 5, 2008, at 7:54 PM

Good job Travis. Also in the paper tonight a note was inserted that the girls b-ball camp would go on as planned. Anyone know who is going to run it? I would also like to see an interview with some of the board members, county commissioner, and the A.D. Dig a bit deeper and let the truth be known in regards to Mike Riggleman's job being stolen..

-- Posted by LHS Dad on Thu, Jun 5, 2008, at 5:21 PM

all i am saying is that having to work with ADs virtually everyday, Mr. Hudson was on top of his job day in day out, often times going out of his way to make the sports department's job a lot easier, but then again not everyone knows exactly what goes on, including myself, but I just know he has been a big help here

-- Posted by TDavid on Thu, Jun 5, 2008, at 3:15 PM

Mr. David,

If you look at the facts surrounding the Bloomfield AD situation instead of taking an emotional stance, you will come to understand that the position that Mr. Hudson held was an "interim" position. He wasn't guaranteed anything that he didn't get - paid to fill in as AD until a new one was hired. Did he get paid for doing the job he was hired to do? I would imagine he did. Was he guaranteed the job beyond the interim time period? I don't think he was.

Like it or not, the Superintendent made a recommendation to hire someone other than Mr. Hudson. The Board ended up narrowly approving his recommendation. He recommended Mr. Hudson the last time, but not this time. Why do you think that is? Could there have been more there on the inside than you could see from the outside? Do you know better than the Superintendent what is best for Bloomfield schools? Sure sounds like it.

-- Posted by leonard on Thu, Jun 5, 2008, at 3:01 PM

mr leonard,

the media only does their job when covering events, and I waited a week after the events of the LS school board meeting to post this blog so I could gather information from both sides. now if the "media" was trying to overshadow this situation as you so suggest, this blog would have been front page news and plastered on the front page of the website as well, and like I said in my blog when most of the people that i talk with at games and in the public want to talk about this board meeting, that is pretty sad. I have a right to express my opinion by writing these blogs, just as you have the right to post a comment on it.

as far as Ms. Abernathy, the "wet behind the ears" was not a quote from me as I stated in the article. she could do a great job, I am not saying that she wont, but I am a firm believer when you have a guy that is willingly able to perform the duties ABOVE and BEYOND expectations, why is there a need for a change????

but then again I am just a sports writer so what do i know.......

-- Posted by TDavid on Thu, Jun 5, 2008, at 2:02 PM

Nice article Travis!

You are right on with your comments.

-- Posted by Riggy13 on Thu, Jun 5, 2008, at 12:58 PM

Interesting blog heading. The only way the school boards could "overshadow outstanding performances" is if the media has a hand in it. Good job Travis in trying to make the school issues more important than the outstanding performances.

I find it also interesting that you "don't want to to disrespect Monica Abernathy", yet you do just that by calling her "wet behind the ears" because of her age. I find it interesting that people comment about her age, yet most of these same people wanted Bloomfield to hire someone close to the same age last time they were looking (ie Josh Thompson).

So, instead of writing a blog that creates negative sentiment and causes "overshadowing", how about a blog that has more of a positive feel. Oh right, people like to complain... so give em what they want... complaints!

-- Posted by leonard on Thu, Jun 5, 2008, at 6:53 AM

the boards should be very carefully looked at regardless of what happens with the teams with their new coaches........

-- Posted by TDavid on Wed, Jun 4, 2008, at 5:43 PM

Very well said Travis. Time will tell how these situations work out but if the new coaches don't improve thes records, win sectionals or regress then the members of the current boards should be removed for their arrogance and short sightedness.
