Time cannot change a friend

The following was published in May 2007 in the Greene County Daily World.

To have a friend is to be one.

Over the years, I have known many people. Some have come and gone like a quick wind on a warm day.

But, no matter how much time has passed, you know when you have a true friend.

Time or silence cannot touch what a true friendship is. Years can go by, stretched by periods of a change.

You can change your job. You can move away. You can grow older as time passes away. But, a true friendship will always remain.

It's funny, because I speak from a recent experience that came like a gift from the universe.

It was years ago that I had spoke to my friend, Shireen. It was just like any other day, we didn't know that it would take 11 more to speak again.

Over those 11 years, I still often wondered where she was and if she was OK. I had even searched for her through the telephone directory and on the net. I thought I was close several years ago when the operator found her number listed in another state. (Her name is quite original and I have yet to hear another person by the same.)

But, when I called the number she wasn't there. The person who answered told me I had the wrong number. So, I guess it wasn't meant to be.

But, just a couple of weeks ago I had returned home from work and was checking my missed calls when her name popped up on my caller ID.

Only a matter of seconds passed before I was calling her back. She answered and we both screamed.

Turned out that over the years she had also been trying to find me.

Eleven years later, she is at my house hanging out like it was just yesterday.

The last time we had seen one another our children were babies. Ramsey wasn't quite a year old and her daughter, Anna, wasn't even 2.

It was this past weekend that I set my eyes on her daughter, and the sweet baby I remembered, was now the spitting image of her mama in a 13-year old body.

Crazy.

I stared at that child in amazement and gave her a big squeeze. I know she thought I was crazy.

But, Shireen experienced the same when years later she set sight on Ramsey. She grabbed his face and kissed his cheek.

Right now I can't explain why those years passed, but I do know that time did not change the friendship that started years ago.

And now I can say that time may bring many changes but time cannot change a friend.

Hey Sparky70,

Even writers get time off in the summer.

Get off her case, will ya?

simply stating facts there queenie. I dont see any other of the bloggers on here posting previous writings, not even one, let alone half of their blogs.

sparky70,

So many times in my life I have run into situations where someone has justified things they've said by the phrase "I was only stating facts." The problems with that line of justification are rife. Firstly, more often than not, someone was hurt by the content of the 'facts'. Second, the speaker rarely has all of the facts. Third, it's not necessary to state facts simply because you are aware of them. Fourth, often the speaker is stating facts that are obvious to all, and therefore not necessary to point out, unless you believe someone you're speaking to has an IQ lower than their shoe size. Even then it's pointless, since someone with a developmental disability that severe isn't likely to either read the paper or care about reprints.

What if Timberly's son had been profoundly ill and in Riley Hospital for the past two weeks? What if the paper told her not to worry about her articles, that they would cover for her so she could concentrate on her son's care? How would you feel about criticizing her publicly if her son died and all you had done was write negative things about her?

Thank God that isn't the case here. But simply stating the obvious facts when you don't have the personal information that may make a great difference on your point of view of the situation is very damaging. I don't know why Timberly has a couple of reprints lately. Instead of implying publicly that she's lazy, I assumed she took a couple of weeks off to be with her family, maybe to help promote her husband's music. But either way, it's not my business. It's hers alone. I simply have the great benefit of enjoying her writing. Rereading some older stuff is beneficial because my brain doesn't always remember every word of every thing I read. Timberly often has very interesting points of view to share on a wide variety of subjects. It's refreshing to read her straight talk. She calls 'em like she sees 'em. Very honest.

So perhaps it would be kinder to refrain from stating the facts, especially when we may not be in possession of ALL of the facts. Criticism, without construction, is rarely honest or kind.

Hey sparky, incase you haven't noticed, Timberly writes an awful lot of stories every single week. I'd imagine there's not many hours left to write blogs after fulfilling all of her other duties -- covering meetings, driving to and from those meetings, covering various events throughout the county, compliling community notes, etc. There's only 40 hours in a work week and covering the news is a very time consuming job.

Timberly and the other staff writers do a great job keeping us informed of what's going on in Greene County. Keep up the good work, reporters!

Not once did i mention anything about timberly or any other reporter there not being busy. simply stating that a lot of her blogs are reprints. the other news reporters write just as much if not more and all their blogs are new.

ever read the sports section? the sports guys cover numerous games each night and yet still write new blogs. and what about court news? seems like anna covers most of those and she still comes up with new blog material.

not saying, just saying.

Deja vu all over again

Who is Queenie? Seems all she does is make fun or correct other people, seems like she has nothing to do but critize others and that is not a Christian thing to do.
