Here's one thing I'll never understand... People who talk endlessly on their beloved cell phones. You know the ones. They travel in droves. Possibly in cars or even walking down the street together. It could be a husband and wife or a mother and son anywhere. They're easy to spot. Most of the time they are clueless to who they are with and what is going on around them. Instead their endless chatter only matters to the person in another world away who is equally unaware of what is going on. Funny huh? With all our technological advances we can easily have the entire world at our hands but at the same time we are lost to the one we are in. What could be more pressing than the present moment? Right here. Right now. Look around you, this is it people. That walk down the street with your partner may be the last one you have. That ride in the car with your son may be the last one together. It's so simple but yet the further we advance technologically the more we forget. At the drop of a hat we have the temperature in Saudi Arabia, the score of the Cubs game and the latest presidential poll. But, is that information overload worth the loss of those precious moments spent with loved ones? Or the smell of the season that surrounds us everyday? Or the laughter spent with friends? Being alive is a gift in itself. We won't be here forever so let's own it while we can. -- Timberly Ferree is a staff writer at the Greene County Daily World. My favorite are the ones who can't even leave their cell phones behind long enough to have a meal in a restaurant...better yet the people who cannot accept that there is no reception and walk around saying "hello", "hello", "can you hear me now?", "are you there?"...LOL
I'm replying to this blog on my cell phone, which gets I get updates from the GCDW on. I would text a reply, but I has to get the score of the cubs game. TTYL
We need laws against cell phones being used while driving, and at schools. Someone using a cell phone while driving is not much different than a drunk driver, and cell phones at schools are nothing but a distraction, and don't just blame the students, the teachers are just as guilty.
Are cell phones allowed on school grounds at all during school hours?
I don't want my childs phone taken from her just because she is at school. We work an hour from home. She knows when to use it and when not to. It is the kids that use them to cheat and text during class that need guidance with them not the once who have them because they need them.
I am a very very heavy Blackberry cell phone user(just ask anybody that knows me), my business and my career does help my ability to provide for my family and causes in life. I have the toys.
Now--- go back to 1960's and 1970's -- growing up on a successful farm in Smith Township...... we went to the field without a cellphone. I wonder how back in those days did my Dad do what he did without a Blackberry/iPhone, cellphone, computer, 2 way radio, fax machine and Fed Ex. Answer = focus. Oh and when lunch was ready - we saw Mom waving a white towel to come in from the fields. I do not know a person in my industry today that does not have a cellphone or 2 way device in his pocket. I cannot function without my Blackberry cellphone, laptop with aircard, 12 Volt printer. The thought of coming home at the end of the day to make all the phone calls and mail any letters out or read the incoming mail. What about waiting on a customers contract in the US Mail today - heck I have Email, Fax and Fed Ex. Here is another thing- I sure have a lot of expense for this modern day communication. Just figured up I spend almost $500 a month for just the "basics"
I am guilty - I use my phone (w/Bluetooth), laptop and drink coffee while driving.
Time to slow down, I think.
great article- made me rethink. Time to get back to work,
lintonite-I am one of those who takes my cell phone with me everywhere. Why?? when my son was in Iraq I did not want to miss that call.that one that came few and far between and you never knew if it would be the last.He is home now,but my cell is still with me 24-7.this time it is because I have a parent with health problems and need to be reached quickly.
I agree there are lots and I mean lots out there who abuse the cell phone and blab their personal business for the whole world, but there are some of us who need that phone for more important things than telling everyone in hearing distance that Johnny cheated on Sue with Barbie
WOW! I don't understand small town Indiana.....maybe that's why I moved. Whats it matter if someone is talking on their phone in their car, at the restaurant, or walking around the store? Whats it matter to you? Whats the difference between them having a conversation with a person standing/sitting next to them and talking on a phone? Maybe their loved one cant be there so all they have is a phone conversation? Just because you dont have anyone to talk to dont get mad at people that do.
Now armymom1 - you are allowed to do that. miner26, yes it seems others like to mind other peoples business at times. I have learned to never judge now - ya just never know when it will bite you in the backside as it did me.
And armymom1,, shhhh dont tell on me.
I do hope your summer is going well.
I agree with you MINER 26. Mine is with me at all times 2. People just need to mind there own business!!
You're right linton mom and miner26. People should not expect to be able to sit down for a meal at a restaurant and not hear your very important conversations. What the heck are they thinking?
so mymanmitch let me get this straight when you go out you never talk to anyone? You eat in silence just staring at the person across from you at the table? Highly unlikely! The point I'm making is talking on the phone and talking to a person standing right next to you is the same. Do you get mad at people who talk in a restaurant while they are eating or while they are shopping or while they are driving in a car?
I dont know about you miner26, I talk quieter on my cell phone than I do face to face with somebody.
I actually do enjoy silence.
Cell phones are prohibited from schools during class times. Most teachers will take a phone away from a student if they are caught with it. But I do not beleive they should be banned from being inside of the school. The one small peace of mind that I have as a mom is that my teenage daughter has a way of communicating with me where she is and who she is with after school. With all the weirdos and pervs out there, though it can't be used as a weapon a cell phone can be used to call for help or at least be used as a tracking device. It is too bad that we have come dependant upon our cells phones, but I also see it as some sort of security. I know that if I break down in the middle of BFE I don't have to walk miles to find a phone (hopefully there is a signal!).
The phones that I think are funny are the ones that people attach to their ears and wear regardless of whether they are on the phone or not! Like a piece of jewelry! Like in the 80s when people wore one or more beepers to look important! LOL.
I do think it is rude to talk on your cell phone in restaurants, especially when the conversation gets personal. There are some things that should just be left to discuss in the privacy of your home. Unless, it is a call I think I should take, I don't answer my phone or I put it on vibrate. If I do answer it, I make it short and sweet and explain I am at dinner and will call back.
Texting bugs me more than talking on a cell does, especially at the dinner table. My daughter has lost her texting for a month more than once for violating this rule and she no longer brings her phone to the kitchen with her. I think she has learned her lesson there!
The old adage has been twisted around:
"Invention is the mother of necessity"!
Wow. To think, I still have a phone with a rotary dial.
Cell phone is an oxymoron... no one I know has a phone in their jail cell. Come to think of it, I don't know anyone who's in jail. Maybe I need to call the sheriff about those cell phones?
LOL how is cell phone an oxymoron?? "cell" (a shortened version of "cellular") and "phone" are not contradictory of each other...the definition of oxymoron is a rhetorical figure in which incongruous or contradictory terms are combined, as in a "deafening silence" and a "mournful optimist" or in some people's case an "intelligent idiot". Good try though!
Cell phone are a gift and a curse. My son has one (15) and it lets me keep in touch with him where ever he goes. I take mine hunting and fishing in case i have an accident. my wife can call home during breaks at work. But yes i have heard her say. can you hear me or I'm losing you, well you know the list go on and on.But admit it they are pretty handy. But also a distraction as well. My family is not allowed to talk and drive, They can pull over if it is that important.
